Two questions.
We kind of understand that a promoted 'same item' listing will/can show up as competition on a listing we clicked on.
#1 - Our search is set to show lowest first - what do the promoted listings look like on the search landing page? Have never seen any listing marked promoted or delineated in any way to make it 'stick out from the pack' - other then the two sponsored ones at the end of the list, which kind of stick out being at the end.
- searched two 'big name' items, a shoe brand and a rock band, and both had two labeled sponsored as the last listings on all pages, all having a higher price then the one before and the first one on the next page.
#2 - Also, if we click on a sponsored listing just to see what brand name they entered in the IS, does the seller get charged.

Yes, sponsored listings are promoted ones.
#2: I guess it depends on what promotion they are are using.
If they are using the pay per click, yes they get charged.

On Lowest price 1st, you might see "sponsored" down the page. BUT, they should be in Price Order.
Until you get to the bottom of a page. There you will see two or three Sponsored listings that are obviously out of Price order. The same will happen on each page, as you switch.
Seller only gets charged per click if you click on a listing that Promoted Advanced (but you won't know which Promotion they have going).
If you DID know it was Promoted Advanced, you could just click and back out and click again, and again, and again. They would get charged every time.

Thank you poster one, your reply was short, sweet and to the point.
We will stop clicking on those sponsored ones ... unless the only one.
Again, thank you.

I really doubt that it works that way, in most pay-per-click set ups there has to be a significant gap between clicks for a single user to be counted multiple times.
In any event, not that many sellers are using pay-per-click (Promoted Advance).

Thank you also poster two, your more detailed reply made us think -
You said "On Lowest price 1st, you might see "sponsored" down the page. BUT, they should be in Price Order."
By down the page we think you're saying listings marked as sponsored will show up in price order, just as they would if not sponsored. We have seen/notice that - have seen marked sponsored in the 'middle' of the three listings shown, along with a copy pinned at the bottom.
But in the case of the two big names - let's say nike and the beatles - there were none sponsored on the first page of 240. I can't believe that those two don't have anything sponsored within the first 240.
And I just notice the 'might' in your statement which 'might' be the reason - first page none, second maybe
Again, thank you

Unless you think they might be your competition. Then click away!

But it does. Or at least it did a few months ago. There was even a note in faq explaining it

Correct.
It makes sense that when an item is promoted/sponsored, it will fall in Price line with your Sort. It would show up as sponsored, but not be forced upon you, at the top, since you specified a Sort (low to high).
And I'm fairly sure that's correct.
However, every now and then, you will see One Seller's Promoted item "Sponsored", and then down below it you will see the same item again, without the "Sponsored" out beside it. (but same item number).
I've not figured that out yet. I don't see that often.
ALSO, if you Promote an item, it's not much assurance that it will be anywhere near the top on Best Match. Or the 1st page. Or seeming anywhere to found for that matter.
SO, when I promote an item, I'm doing it so that it will hopefully show up as Cross Promotion inside of a competitors listing.

Yes its true... and ebay even charges the seller if they click their own listing.

Promoted and sponsored listing are not the same. They don't come from the same place. Promoted listing are run by EBay for additional fee which the Seller agreed to pay if the item sells. Sponsored listings are third party promotions by manufacturers or other entities, run by EBay. If the listings are sponsored, EBay cannot charge additional fees for the same listings.

You are mistaken. Promoted Listings ARE Sponsored Listings. The term Promoted is what seller's engage in and those become Sponsored listings and those are 2hat the buyer sees and engages with. They are one in the same.
