I haven't been reading these forum posts for long.
Have there always been so many buyers "accidentally buying" something or trying to cancel right after buying an item?
Just curious if there have always been buyers that don't understand that clicking buy now, accept offer, place your bid etc. is in effect entering a contract to actually follow through with it in good faith.
I don't sell, only buy and to be honest I'm amazed at so many posts in buying AND selling with buyers complaining about being expected to follow through on their purchases. Like they are being treated badly.
Accidentally buying something really gets me. I'd be too embarrased to admit that in a public forum for one thing.

On average, I have less than 1 cancellation per quarter. Generally I find it a non-issue.
Would rather a buyer cancel for whatever reason. Much better than having to deal with a return and issues that may go with that from a buyer who “ordered by mistake” and is now mad they have to return.

In any case, if a buyer wants out, cancel, the sooner the better. You should add them to your blocked bidder list. It's hard for some to resist those bid and buy buttons.

Welcome to the Community. I hope it makes for interesting reading, and if you do consider selling at some point, the things you've learned here will position you far ahead of where most of us were when we made our firsts listings!
That said, this is the last place to glean any meaningful sense of site-wide prevalence of any kind of buyer or seller behavior, LOL. On the one hand, only a tiny fraction of all eBay'ers participate in the Community even once, and the number with regular participation is infinitesimal. On the other hand, when people do post here, it's usually with a problem, making the site appear far more problematic than it would if we also posted about every transaction that went according to plan.
In short, the Community is both an under-sample and over-sample of problems buyers and sellers face on the site.
EDIT: The one exception would be glitches. If you're encountering something 'weird' on the platform, this is the best place to find out if it's just you, ha.

Here are 3 links on eBay's order cancellation policies for both the buyer and seller, read up.
Contract what contract?? eBay sellers and buyers all signed the eBay User Agreement the second they signed it.
Here is the most accepted definition of the meaning of the term "sale"
"A sale is considered complete when the buyer has paid the agreed-upon price and has received the product or service, often including a signed receipt as proof of the transaction; essentially, when the exchange of goods for payment is finalized".
eBay's money back guarantee offers buyers protection for 30 days where buyers can return and be refunded.
a no returns seller policy does not bean no refunds.

Looks like you didn't read the part of my post where I don't cancel sales and also don't sell. I don't cancel so don't have the need to "read up".
I know about the user agreement.
I know the defination of the word sale.
By clicking the aforementioned buttons I was inferring a buyer has in effect entered a contract to buy the item, at least ethically and morally. Even if they didn't think it through beforehand it's (At least in my opinion) their duty and obligation to follow through with the sale regardless of second thoughts. "I didnt mean to" or "I changed my mind" or "I accidentally bought it" doesn't cut the mustard....so to speak.
Just my take on it...............................

LOL I don't know why you're getting all these replies as if you're a seller and getting sales cancelled. Maybe edit your post and write in bold letters the first sentence clarifying that you are not a seller but curious about sellers' experiences. -I still say you can't get a reliable measurement of something like that here, but at least you might avoid irrelevant answers by catering to people's dislike of reading more than a couple sentences.

During or right after paying, with all the adds eBay shows, there's often one cheaper to be seen by the buyer. So they send a cancellation request, and go for the cheaper one.
Why they didn't see it during their search? I can't go there.....

One of the reasons for buyer and seller cancellations in greater numbers than you would expect is the misuse of auctions.
Many items sell on one bid. Sellers are disappointed and do not want to accept their starting bid as a sale price. Buyers who expected there to be action on the item and not to be the high bidder, discover they are the high bidder and immediately start worrying that they overpaid for the item, missed a major defect or are going to pay too much to ship the item.
Wrong format, too low a starting bid and an unhappy buyer and unhappy seller lead to one or more of the party wanting to get out from under their commitment.

The cheaper the item is, as related to it's worth, the more trouble you will have with it. From cancellation requests to returns.

I think a lot of cancellation request can be blamed on Ebay.
As soon as you buy something, Ebay will show the buyer listings where they could have got it cheaper or with free shipping.
