Amount of Time a Buyer has to return an item

So today I tried to get a return closed out.  I usually have no problem getting this done.  It was my understanding that a buyer has FIVE business days to upload tracking or the return can be closed out.  Today, I tried to get a return closed that was opened on Nov. 2.  Ah, it's been five business days and the rep told me that the buyer has TEN business days to return the item!  I don't think the rule has changed since last week when I successfully got a return closed after tracking was not uploaded after FIVE business days.  Something is seriously wrong here....

You are correct the rule is 5 business days.  You tried to close the return just a little too soon.  The CSR was incorrect on the reason, but they are correct that it is too soon to close it.  The seller can't close it until the 6th business day, which in your case is complicated by the holiday on Monday.  So the soonest you can close it is on Tuesday.  And if it were my claim, I would be on the phone first thing Tuesday.

I know it gets confusing between business days and non business days.  But Ebay is really consistent about this and you can close a claim such as you describe but not until the 6th business day.  I know it is frustrating and the weekends and holidays just may your agony last longer.

Sometimes ebay will give a buyer more time to return an item. I've heard a buyer can request an extension. Not sure if that's true or not.

That's nuts....there is supposed to be a RULE and I've never had a problem before getting a return closed out.

Yes, that’s true. EBay will grant an extension if asked. It works both ways. Sometimes eBay will grant an extension to sellers when an item Tracking shows it is in route to a buyer who has opened a Not Received claim. Not quite the same thing, but my point is that, historically, exceptions are made at times.
