Am I responding to this person in the correct way? The listing was clear about the condition of the item. Do I just wait for the person to open a return request? Since I offer free return, will I need to pay for the shipping still? This is the first time I have had this situation and I want to handle it right. Please help.

I think I would have refunded the 5.00 though I would be irritated. Just because the shipping is pretty close in cost which your buyer probably knows. Yes you will pay for return. Buyer initiates return then you then approve. Buyer prints label for return. Your account pays for the shipping. Be aware you could get back an empty envelope with tracking and you will be out all of everything. Scams happen. Hope this helps.

Your reply was very diplomatic and correct. Customer is just fishing for rebate. You did everything possible and now all you can do is wait and hope for the best.

Thank you.

In the case that I gave $5. Is it possible the buyer could still just do the return anyways on top of that and then I end up paying the $5 plus the shipping?

My belief is if you give the 5 the buyer will leave you alone. But yes, the buyer could try to file an item not as described which would force you to refund or generate return or he could ask to return straight up. In that case though if you already refunded 5.00 that 5.00 would not be subtracted twice by Ebay. Your response was excellent btw. Sometimes I search the posts to help me in my many times of need and questions. There are so many smart people here, way better than the generic responses from the help center.

when you make a partial refund you just make it from the original purchase
you did what many folks would do
I also notice that you said to return it....rinse and repeat always works well rinse and repeat just means that you need to keep on telling them. "I will be happy to have you return it"
I ghost buyers after one message, they either want to return or they dont
in your case the $5 was very reasonable I think
you cant win trying to do battle with an unhappy seller and you should not bother trying
you did the right thing to put ths in your rear view mirror and just move on from it
the transaction is now over and done with
peace of mind is what I need more of with ebay, that is why i have 30 day free returns
I have always told sellers to go with a return but in this case the $5 is basically equal to one way shipping

I personally would just refund the $5, then ADD this creature to my BLOCK BUYER'S list and call it a day. 👍
Whatever direction you go with. This buyer needs to be on your BLOCK BUYER's list.

Yes, if the buyer files a return, you pay the shipping and would need to refund the rest of the purchase after getting the item back.
After you said, "You are welcome to open a return request", I would leave it at that. The ball is in the buyer's court. Wait and see what they do.

The buyer never went through with a return and made a case with their card company. I fought the dispute with proof clearly described the listing and I won.

Great job!! This was quite an accomplishment.
@kedit-66 I had one important caution to add. I see you conversed via text with the buyer. Instead, always keep all communication about a transaction on eBay Messages. In general, not a safe practice to give your phone number out to a buyer. This is because eBay has access to its messages. Should a dispute arise, eBay needs to be able to review all communications between seller and buyer. It is just in your better interests to avoid conversations off eBay.

It was through ebay app messages. I cropped out the name of the buyer.
