The most popular item?
That would be "a sold item".

Anything not drop-shipped from China. That stuff is total junk.

Hi @dreamation_designs

Any seller with knowledge about the current 'most popular items' is likely to keep that information to themselves.  😉

For me it has never been about popularity but what I could source and make a decent ROI on.

Popular items tend be sold by many a retailer and margins of profit can vary usually in the area of 30% to 400% depending on the items.  For example delisted budget Blu Ray DVD's and such one find in the $5 bins have a costing of about $.75 to $1 each when buying in small volume (1000-2500 DVDs) and they are you get what you get, not pick and choose.   Generally speaking it's pretty hard to compete against retail as you'll loose margin's via online marketplace fee's and expenses.   Items with the very good margins tend be vertical market on the popularity scale yet generally require at least a modest purchase from given distributors.  So for example Car Seat Covers say MSRP be $29.99, with costing of $10 a unit with minimum purchase of 250 or 500 units.  If you were to sell them here at MSRP overall expense be say 15%-20%, $6 or $9 per unit thereabouts (as shipping/tax part of the total in commissions paid).  But most folks not wanting pay MSRP or they just go to the store. Put shipping atop that $29.99 at whatall, say $12 no great deal for consumers.

You'll see many sellers who hit up garage sales, yard sales, consignment shops, thrift stores etc as the margins are pretty much superior to normal distributorship channels.  There is the delist/liquidation channel where one can buy delisted products far far cheaper than original costing/MSRP.  That said, lots and lots of sellers do just that and competing against them can be difficult as most have years and years of investment into their inventories.  So they don't mind taking a smaller margin on newly delisted Widgets X, Y and Z because they still sell Widgets A, B and C which were delisted three years ago supplementing their bottom line "Cash Flow" business model(s).

Now popular items with decent margins like Nike this or Coach that are items that tend require authentication and approval from the manufacturer to sell online at all more or less here.  They are also subject to folks who take advantage of policies and essentially scam sellers, also true of consumer electronics on and on.

If you're seeking you're own niche then really the best thing to do is create you're own products and sites like eBay and Etsy have many folks that do just that.

It's not poorly manufactured, low quality items that are made in China.  Tap into Google and run a search.  I'm sure you'll see & find many items that are trending.

Happy Selling.

But not widgets in general, surely?  I thought only the lavender looped left-handed widgets were the big sellers.

I'm just glad the OP cleared up any doubt about what year it was.

The most popular items this year, and every year, for me and for many others are items that are not drop-shipped.  I know that the sellers have no control over availability, authenticity, quality, proper packing, or timely shipping.  And yet the seller is responsible for all those things and is the only person I can turn to if there is a problem, and that leads to hassle upon hassle.

I kind of like items made in the US, sold by sellers that know a little about the item, not dropshipping from the other side of the world.

Have a great day.
