A look at the Order Cancellation flow

Three emails popped in this morning: PayPal payment, order cancellation request, and item sold (in that order). Buyer purchased and paid and cancelled 2 minutes later. Since this is one of only a couple I have ever done and the first with the new (to me) cancellation system I thought I'd post screenshots for anyone not familiar with it.

Got an eBay message from eBay that "A Buyer Wants To Cancel an Order), and on my My eBay Sold items page there was a note that "buyer wants to cancel" on the item entry (right above the "Ship by Wednesday" note).

Over on the right Options menu the first was a choice to view the cancel request which leads us to:

ebay_Order_Cancel_screen1.gif

then

ebay_Order_Cancel_screen2.gif

and

ebay_Order_Cancel_screen3.gif

and after a bit

ebay_Order_Cancel_screen4.gif

Took a few minutes until the PayPal refund automatically happened, and was pretty much painless (except for the 30¢ PayPal transaction fee I'll never see again - the humanity of it all).

Got a cancellation confirmation email, an eBay message, the Sold page shows it as cancelled, and the "Ship By Wednesday" and "A Buyer Wants to Cancel" notes were replaced with "eBay note: We're just waiting for the buyer to confirm they received a refund for this order. View details". I expect that will change to "Buyer cancelled/was refunded" or somesuch after a while. Buyer went on BBL (wasted my time, cost me 30¢, without a note or any explanation)

Life (with few/no sales) goes on.

There are snakes in the ebay sandbox...sometimes we get bitten.
I imagine the snake population will grow as the holidays approach...

I don't have any firsthand knowledge of the snakes, but am aware of them from reading these forums for almost 15 years.

In this case, assuming buyer isn't a snake - just a numpty, or got a "you got hosed, you could have bought it way cheaper HERE from seller X" email from eBay. Although intellectually curious, don't really care why.

Human beings make mistakes for time to time.  Most of the time they are honest mistakes.  Of course from time to time they aren't.  But a cancellation such as you received doesn't benefit a buyer in any way.  So it is more likely than not that it was just a simple human error or change of mind.

It was an not error - you don't butt dial an ebay purchase, and was likely remorse.

But don't care, and choose not to do business with that (type of) buyer.

If there had been a message, an apology, a note, or some sort of explanation I'd reconsider.

I'm not going to play this evolving "buyers treat sellers like a doormat" game, and give any and all bad buyer behavior a free pass.

I expect buyers to use the same discretion I do as a buyer and comit to purchases. I don't return things or cancel orders because I don't make impulse purchases and do my due diligence.

If that ultimately ends me as a seller, so be it (not a world I want to sell in)

OK you certainly have the right to believe whatever you choose.

This wasn't a personal transaction, it was a business transaction.  Sometimes with a business transaction, the customer doesn't offer a reason.

I see none of this as a "game".  But I am well aware that I'm dealing with human beings.

You may find selling on Ebay to be challenging for youself from time to time, such as you have in this case.  Some buyers may not reach your expectations.  I consider myself a good buyer and a good seller, but I have found from time to time I make a mistake.  I have also had the occasion to return an item that had nothing to do with me doing "my due diligence".

If that ultimately ends me as a seller, so be it (not a world I want to sell in)

It may be.  Depends on how you adapt.  I hope it all works out for you and you excel at selling.

I would add them to my BBL as well.
