2 hours on phone with ebay, learned a new thing you did not know.

ok a problem with a buyer is what this is , package DELIVERED 4 pm march 18th, heres what buyer says.

BUYER

Hello, I’ve received an email saying this item was delivered today. I don’t know where it was delivered but it was not at my address. I’ve looked in every possible place it could have been left with no result. I have a 8 1/2 x 11 clearly posted sign to not leave packages on the porch, but drop over adjacent fence if not home because of theft problems. All I know is there is no package. Please advise.
SELLER
The postman is required to scan the barcode as they deliver the package, this would be a question for your postman as I have no control over the post office. The box was small 2 x 2 x 4 the postman should remember it. wish I could help more. if the tracking went dead I would refund or replace the item. Tracking says delivered, thats a differant story. If you have theft problems that might be the answer.
BUYER
Are you suggesting that it’s not your problem? I’ll file a claim with the post master and check with EBay for my options. All I know is I don’t have my order and you chose the shipping method. As the shipper you’re the only person who has recourse with the post office not the recipient/buyer. I’ve no idea what method you shipped with USPS but there should be some insurance you can claim and reship. You’re not being very helpful.
SELLER
I am saying that if the tracking did not say delivered and time passes, I would promptly refund or replace, No need to hold this on me as the tracking clearly shows I did my part, You are admitting to a theft problem to the point the postman has to put packages over fence. ASK the postman about the package he clearly scanned it when it was delivered. If it was a theft its a POSTAL matter ( not a ebay seller problem.) Tracking again clearly shows I did my part. Buyers are more then welcome to request insurance at the cost of the buyer if they want it. You can file a ebay claim on this item I do not mind at all. I have 19 years of very happy customers. I have done nothing wrong on this order.
BUYER
The EBay claim is filed. With your 19 years of experience you should know that you “the shipper” is the only person who has recourse with USPS and EBay will hold you responsible for making a claim not myself “the buyer”. I’ve no idea where your item was delivered but it wasn’t with me. From here on it’s between yourself, the USPS and EBay to sort this out. I simply want “what you were paid for” delivered to me. FYI, I’m currently not a happy buyer, hoping EBay is able to properly instruct you.
SELLER
WOW you are jumpy, you did not even take the easy advice of asking the postman before jumping on me, yes ebay will instruct me and will be on my side. You are blaming a seller when tracking shows I did my part. Im sure your feedback will be just as unfair.

OK yes my last comment was not nice , oh gosh so hard to say anything from here.

ok package delivered 4pm march 18th, I guess over his fence hehe, oh grrrrr
ok wait SELLERS for this part..

eBay opened a case because of an issue with an item purchased from you. We reviewed the case and have decided to issue the buyer a refund of $13.50 without any impact to you.
This case is now closed. You are not required to reimburse the buyer or eBay, and this case will not be counted in your seller performance evaluation.

ok hmmmm tracking says delivered and buyer gets a refund LESS then 24 hours after that??????? WHAT

2 hours on phone with ebay, 4 supervisers after that and i am told this is a ONE time  refund for buyers.

ok so I ask if I can now tell my future customers about the ONE time refund that is INSTANT for a case like this, they say yes.... oddly  no one I talked to at ebay was speaking clear english,  talked to 5 or 6 people, i kept asking to speak to their supervisor to understand the super fast refund , all had the same voice as Kunal Nayyar on the big bang theory.  oh good grief I just wanted a answer of  why my customer got such a fast refund.    yes I asked the last person for a number to for this call which was  1-00-3672917367   and that call was recorded.

Yes, ebay will refund a buyer in cases like this for LOW dollar items.

eBay values buyers a lot more than a lot of sellers do! They dug in to their own pocket to help a buyer who was hung out to dry by their seller.

You basically told the buyer to drop dead and go away, not a very nice way to treat a customer.

Honestly - I can't believe someone with your selling history spent this amount of time on a $13 transaction.

Then eBay issues a courtesy refund to the buyer with no impact on you and you STILL keep poking the bear?? Just walk away and add this buyer to your best buddies list.

It shows the insanity Ebay gets to bring upon themselves. Once the scammers learn about this easy "it's delivered but I can't find it, they certainly will play that game but this time they will get some naïve and honest seller to pay up in fear of getting a red doughnut.

It is pretty easy to understand.  The eBay money back guarantee (MBG) clearly tells buyers they will get what they thought they were buying or get there money back.  There is a lot to unpack from that statement but basically eBay is saying if you are not satisfied after all the efforts we will provide you will get a full refund.  That is what the guarantee is.

This is eBay's guarantee not the seller guarantee so that is why eBay pays for these claims against the MBG.

I would not try to get in between your buyers and eBay's claim that they will one time issue these kinds of refunds.  You do not know your buyers total history on eBay so you would be out of line mentioning something like this.

eBay is an international company, in fact they are much more international than a US company, so all nationalities are needed as well as respect and patience is needed when you encounter new experiences in this area.

Good Luck Selling!

I would have not spent time calling eBay. They gave the buyer an out off their pocket refund after tracking showed delivered.

I recently went through the same deal and eBay gave the buyer a ~$125 courtesy refund.  Buyer scammed eBay.  I know the buyer had his item and eBay did as well.  That is just how eBay operates.

At least the buyer is on Ebays radar now and on your BBL .

Also for future reference, once the package is scanned as delivered, nobody is filing a claim for missing or non-delivered package. The carrier will flat out deny that claim.

Buyer is responsible for providing a safe delivery location and tracking down their package once scanned as delivered.

I agree with the OP maybe not to the extent of the back and forth emails but Courtesy Refunds is the reason the OP got that first email and their buyer know it.   It is not one time and it is the reason so many of your sellers get partial refund requests.    A SELLER CANNOT KNOW HOW A PERSON RECEIVES THEIR MAIL.   The package could have been placed inside the house and they still know they can get a refund from ebay.   There is IMPACT TO YOU BIG TIME.   So glad I am out on March 31.   Online selling and managed payments is not going to get any better.

Really, hung out to dry?  Just exactly would you have the seller do in this situation?   The tracking clearly shows it was delivered, the buyer admits to having their packages put across the fence and the buyer won't check with the PO to see just exactly what happened.

Buyers who live in an area where they cannot leave packages on the porch bear some responsibility for taking care of those packages.  They need a safe place for the PO or other shipping company to leave their items.

It is not the responsibility of the sellers to drive to the buyers address and physically look for the package.  It is not the seller's responsibility to refund a buyer in this case and they really should not have to.

The seller did the job required to get the item to the buyer's address as testified to by the deliver scan.

Anything after that is on the buyer.

It's not the scammers you have to worry about. It's the buyers that don't know about the scam that will use it you have to worry about. Best solution is require a signature...lol

Speaking of which, my daughter ordered something from china - go figure - got a signature notification. Thought it was some stuff I had shipped in. I went to get it and to my disappointment, once I signed the pad, I get a bag with a clothing item in it. From china, signature required. Asked my daughter how much she paid, under 20 bucks. So I guess even the Chinese sellers are figuring out you can't trust the buyer in the U.S. anymore...lol

Cheers

How do you and EBay know the buyer has his item?

For that matter, how do you know what EBay “knows?”

It was a long thread a while back.  The eBay rep said to me quote, "he has his item".

After I had eBay close the case 6 days later with no refund due to tracking shows delivered, the buyer mysteriously found the package within the hour of the closure and opened another case of damaged or not as described and eBay gave him a courtesy refund.

I won't get into all the rest of the details before he claimed to not have received the delivery, but this guy was working it, and has continued to work eBay since then.  I know that for a fact as well.

Why would you get into such a back and forth with your buyer?  If you didn't want to refund your buyer as a courtesy, simply say so and leave it there.    And then to waste 2 hours on the phone with eBay over this???

As to the poster who said a carrier (assuming USPS here) will deny a claim when a package shows as delivered, that is true, but they will approve it on appeal with a signed affidavit providing the package had some kind of indemnity.

Show some empathy, contact USPS to report an incorrect delivery........

At least appear to be helpful instead of just conveying the message that the seller doesn't care and the buyer must be lying.
