Promoted Listings - Work for anyone?

Does promoted listings work for anyone?  I have tried it and didn't make any difference.  In fact, I had a listing for 2 items, and it was on so long that I decided to offer at break even price.  I had forgotten it WAS a promoted listing, so when both sold at the break even price -  I was them charged $29  each for promotion!!

This means I lost over $30 on each!.

Anyone have any better luck?

I use PLS @2% and it’s done ok for me.
Some of my sales are are through a promoted listing some aren’t. I also incorporate the cost of PLS and other fees into the cost of my items.

I promote 3% across the board. I average 70% sales from promotion, so I actually only pay 2.1% ad fee on average.

Works extremely well for me and is baked into my costs, I don't even notice it as an "extra" expense.

I only promote the high end expensive items. Under 200 items I have promoted.

And if a seller promotes everything....then I guess a seller doesn't care if they pay more in daily fees.

I actually promote above what eBay suggests as well.

I did sell something that was promoted at 18%. Ouch! But if I can get more "repeat buyers" then it is worth it.

For me...it's all about "repeat buyers".

I figure if someone sees a high end priced item they will look at lower price items on my store.

One has to give a few bargains to get those "repeat buyers".

I don't want to be a greedy seller.
