I sold an item and the item was delivered on January 4th, 2022. It was accepted and I got paid for it. But today, January 21st, the buyer of that item requested a return saying that it “arrived broken” with a comment saying that “it’s either defective or not compatible with Mac”.
my question is, why would he state that it’s broken now, almost 3 weeks later after accepting it, and also, what am I obligated to do? He wants to return it, which is fine, but I know for certain it’s not broken and IS compatible for Mac because I used it, I sold it as used. It’s a very small item and very hard to get damaged during shipment I thought.
Maybe I’m not seeing something or I’m confused but that’s why I’m asking, to fully understand the situation.

eBay has an excellent Money Back Guarantee that protects buyers. It does not matter what you say that item worked, and it is compatible with MAC, what matters is what the buyer is saying. Buyer needs to submit a return request through eBay, you in turn will accept it and a return label is sent to buyer, who will package it and send it back to you, upon tracking confirms it is delivered, refund is sent.
Some buyers use this to scam sellers, and instead of returning the product, they just send an empty box, or some other trinket, once received, eBay automatically issues is refund, and the buyer gets to keep the item. Hopefully that is not the case for you, but those are the risk on selling here. Another scam that buyers do is that they swap their broken item for a working one, and return the broken, thus getting a working item at not cost.

Maybe they just around to using it?
If they file an INAD and you want it returned, accept the return and provide return shipping.
If they haven't opened a case, tell the buyer sorry they're having problems with it and to return it for a full refund.

You have to accept the return
What is your return policy? If you have 'no returns' as a policy, refund will be issued by software at point of tracking show item delivered back to you. On other hand, if you have a 30 day return policy, once you receive the item back, you've 48 hours to inspect the item for damages. You have a chance to get %50 of the sale amount if Buyer caused any damages to the item
So, it's up to whatever the policy you have placed on Sales Venue but return is automatic and item will be coming back to you
Just accept the return, send a label, test the product upon receiving it and repost it for sale adding your extra costs
