A seller sent me the wrong item, and I suggested a partial refund. They agreed, so should I proceed by opening a return request or can I just ask the seller to send the refund through Ebay?
Here's what I'm worried about:
1) Will the request negatively affect the seller? I understand sellers have a performance score; will the request hurt that score at all?
2) Do I need the use the official form to have protection of some sort, such as the seller asking me to send the item back later?

@ticonderoga2011 With respect you really should read up on the policies here for your own protection. I say that because your questions seem to indicate you aren't familiar enough and will only find yourself a victim of a scammer coming along.
That said I will gladly answer your questions.
A seller can send you a partial refund at any time, it's really quite easy. Once they do so you will receive that refund immediately into your PP account.
No a seller is not negatively affected by a partial refund, that has nothing to do with seller metrics. That's kind of you to be concerned though.
If you were to return your item than yes you would need to open a return case, but you do not need to return the item for only a partial refund. By working with you the seller is agreeing to a tradeoff, you keep the item and they give you back some of the money you spent for the error.
If you have any further questions please write them here. I do hope you take some time to do a little reading for your own benefit. Best of luck to you....

Thanks for the answer.
What made me seem vulnerable to a scam?

@ticonderoga2011 The way in which you wrote your questions was more with concern for the seller and their account vs your own money. While it's noteworthy of your concern, you need to place yourself first and make sure that you are fully covered. Scammers look for vulnerabilities with newer buyers and you have a low feedback score, that also makes you a target....

Oh, I see. Thanks for the tip.
