Updating stock/inventory amounts using one identifying value only

I want to use the API (I don't really mind which API as long as it's not going to be deprecated anytime soon) to be able to update stock on any of our items.

I'm currently using ReviseInventoryStatus of the old API, but I'm not sure it's the best solution.

It seem that, to be able to update any listing a variation item, I need both the 'Ebay Item Number' tio get the parent, and the EAN to specify the variation. Is there a way that I can use just one unique ID to update both simple or variation items?

It seem ridiculous that I would need two unique and identifying values to be able to update a variation stock level.

Thanks in advance.

Nobody? Confirming or denying this would be helpful.

I am using new REST API but I don't have variations.

I am reading items with old API but use new API for update stock/prices.

I have put up a guide, you can read through here.
