Foxing

Looking through my archive I've separated out and isolated any cards with evidence of mold or fungus activity. I'm not certain if the same needs to be done with evidence of 'foxing'. Should they be isolated also? Is it biological in nature so as to threaten other articles? Werner Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, Ba-HumBug, etc, etc.

About 10 seconds at google showed numerous sources, this looks useful to your question http://www.answers.com/topic/foxing seems the jury is out on the cause. I suggest you dig a bit deeper for your solution. -- Jim in KC

Thanks for the lead. None of the resources I have found deal with storage/isolation issues. My question is to the group, what do you folks do ? Werner

My personal collection are in archive safe boxes, albums, holders, and some just loose sitting on bookshelves, tables, dressers, and a variety of other flat surfaces. Joyce -- Postcards of all ages For all ages!

Thanks, but do you isolate (quarentine) cards with foxing?

No, I just make sure they are dry and the air helps stop any damage. On a side note I did take a "throw a way" card and bleached it to see if that worked (read it somewhere years ago) It did bleach out the stains with no damage to the card but it also bleached out the ink from the address. I would not advise anyone to do this, I just wanted to see what would happen. Joyce -- Postcards of all ages For all ages!

Foxing is many (not all) times caused by exposure to strong light, such as an unprotected card sitting near a window that gets strong sun. Diane --

Diane, are you telling me to clean up my cards which are all over the house? How is everything going? Joyce -- Postcards of all ages For all ages!

Nope Joyce, I'm not telling you to do anything, lol. Just suggesting a non-biological agent as a cause for foxing/toning. Things are ok right now, thanks for asking, Joyce. My DH is being very impatient about a lot of things though. He can't really do much physical stuff except walk. He's chomping at the bit about golf (that's still another month or two down the road for him) and it's the best part of the year here for golf, so I don't blame him. He's still worried about the prostate thing, his appointment with the urologist is a little over a week away. All in all, he's driving me up the wall but I love him and he's recovering (I think) very nicely from his surgery. He's just wanting to do more than he can do right now. I've pretty much taken the last couple of months off from ebay because it's been so nutso here. My ebay store is still open but I haven't had any auctions running. Good thing I have the websites, sales there have been financially carrying us through all of this. Thanks again for asking. Diane --

Diane, I am happy to hear your Christmas was more pleasant than your Thanksgiving (way way understatement!) Men ARE difficult at times but it sounds good that he wants to get "up and out!" Maybe it would be alright to play miniature golf? I know it's not the same but just having a putter in his hand LOL! Joyce -- Postcards of all ages For all ages!

Nope Joyce, no miniature golf and no "just putting". Something about the movement strains your abdominal muscles a bit more than they would like at his stage of recuperation. Otherwise he would have been out there doing exactly that a long time ago. He has a follow-up appointment with his surgeon week after next (I think) and he's going to ask him if he can AT LONG LAST start putting and chipping. Heck, he's not even allowed to drive a car yet. He can't take either of the dogs out to go pee because if they pull on the leash he's in trouble. And I have to lift anything that weighs more than 5 pounds, because that's his limit. Good thing I have a very strong upper body, lol. On a brighter note, I started golfing a bit more myownself and, thankfully, my handicap is finally coming down a bit, back to being just a bit higher than where it probably should be instead of outrageously higher. I have a regular Sunday morning game with 3 people who are better than me and I always seem to learn something from at least one of them every week. Heck, now that I think about it, just about everybody that I play with is better than me, lol. I get killed by 6 or 8 handicappers. At any rate, I'm off to gp grocery shopping and then golf. Everyone please enjoy their day, I'm going to try to :) Diane --

Glad to hear that you hubbie is doing well, even if he is driving you up the wall! Enjoy your golf. Neil hasn't played for a year now due to work and family stuff, so his handicap is unmentionable at the moment! I haven't been selling much here as I have been busy doing fairs to bring in extra cash. I am up at 4am tommorow to go to Cambridge for a 2 day fair. I will be ready to drop by the time I get to the hotel on Saturday night! Sara

I am probably like most of you guys, I have a stack of post cards, actually I have had them for 40 years, my father gave them to me when I was 18. The majority are German, some with writing, some without, they are all old around 1917-1923. I believe I have a couple of Nazi ones. A few Japanese and several American old cards. I also have some paper German money, again, about the same age. I don't know where to even start with them. Can you help me? I really appreciate any comment. Thank you.

Sandyjune, For general guidance, one of the best things you could do is read through the posts made by members of this group. :) There is a wealth of information here, all you need to do is dig it out a little. Postcards are a subject that is easy to learn a little about, but can take years and years and years to become an expert. I'm no expert and I've been at it for longer than I care to admit! If you have specific questions, feel free to ask away. But I'd take some time reading posts here first, they will no doubt answer many of your questions. Diane --
