Lets Talk Tire Siping...

I recently purchased a set of tires on eBay and reside in Oregon.

Upon visiting Les Schwab for tire mounting, they proposed a "tire siping" service, which involves cutting small, crosswise slits to the treads to decrease hydroplaning risks.

I opted out of the service due to unfamiliarity and concerns about potentially voiding the tire's warranty. Having had no weather-related issues with my previous tires, I saw no need for the modification.  Th new tires are exactly what the vehicle came with.

So, does anyone on motors know anything pro or negative about tire siping?  Is it worth it?

I'm old, and never knew about this, of course the last set of tires was many years ago...😎

I would get it if you can afford it. If you are not aware of tire siping, it is common to question why would anyone cut slits in brand new tires. ðŸ˜€  In Southern Oregon it is normal. If you are using chains on your tires, might not make much a difference.

Here's a tire siping info video from Les Schwab.  Also in Southern Oregon...hmmmm...

Performance Tire Siping | What is Tire Siping - Les Schwab

These were 21" SUV tires I had installed when LS offered the siping service. Can be done later they said as I didn't know enough about it.

The research I have done is it costs like $15 each tire and it's too expensive for the tire manufacturers to do.  Go figure.

I could have sworn I put this on motors since it's about automotive tires.  ????

If the video is a problem, it was only to inform others about tire siping. I had never heard of it.

I don't understand the moderation post.

Some tires are manufactured with sipes by a special molding process, and the tread blocks are designed and reinforced for this. These tires are safe to use because they were designed and tested this way.

Aftermarket sipes provide little benefit (that can actually be demonstrated), may be unsafe, and it is likely to void the warranty on the tires. It is illegal in some states. It may reduce performance in hot weather.

Sounds very unnecessary, and possibly dangerous.

I'm not going to do it, because I have never needed it before, and I would hate to ruin $1200 worth of tires.

DO NOT GET THEM SIPED IF THEY WEREN'T ALREADY

The manufacturer would sipe them if they were needed for a specific tire brand or rollout *ba dum tss*

If they were to sipe them, that can change the pattern to where it could cause uneven wear, bad tread, etc. Not worth the extra $$ imho
