Here is a link to Bar Mills Models on-line newspaper and information station. Art has 4 new on-line videos that you might find interesting. The first two are about Bar Mills Models itself. The next two are instructive videos. One on different types of glues and their use and the other on the new Bar Mills weathering powders. There are also pictures of some of the kits available. Enjoy. http://barmillsmodels.com/dailymoose_05A_05.html

I didn't rally have the intention of doin security work forever. It was to get out of the military and do something different until I could get my foot in CP Rail. It can be real boring but very unstressful. Don't have 3 different bosses or all kinds of different jobs/projects (like in military) . I don't disklike. There is an opening at Standard Aero here so I am gonna try with them. The do repair/overhaul/servicing of aircraft engines. I was avionics but with my technical experience, I could work at a bench installing parts, etc. Pay has to be better. (see irritation)

I also bit the bullet today. I went in to talk to someone about joining the reserves. This security work is BORING and insane. And the pay really sucks. I am done in selling myself out for cheaper assignments for the sake of getting hours. IF it gets any more worse I may as well go work at Hone Depot. If I go full time time reserves (full time hours) plus my military pension, I will make 35% more than had I stayed in miltary. Plus 2 weeks pay in reserves is more than a month's pay with the outfit I'm at now. PLUS, I get 22 days annual leave plus I have to take a mandatory 35 days off (without pay)every year. With the pay increase then that won't be an issue. I didn't intend to go this route from the beginning as I wanted a change, but right now if I am driving to the base to guard the gate, then I may as well work on planes on the same base for more cash. The railroads are dead here for openings. One job I applied disappeared all together off the website. Plus in the reserves I don't go on weird deployments on short notice (or at all) I don't do the main deployments (overseas) (not that I minded those) nor will I do the off hour pagers, nor any other trips. So it's sad to say that I am looking forward to ditching the security and going back into the military world that drove me to get out. The $$$$ will make it all worthwhile. Plus if I do get an oppotunity to get hired in railroads, I can change my status to part time reserves and just do a couple days a month to keep active status. I like the leave benefits as it will provide opportunities to do some long awaited family travelling, that I couldn't do before or since getting out. Still no scooter. Obviously my ^%$%$$ parts didn't come in today!!!! Maye with the fatter paychecks I will just say F*** IT and buy a real bike.

Interesting that as a reservist you don't get deployed overseas. So different from the US. Look a my son Master Sgt. Chris who was deployed twice to Iraq. He's a reservist, not active duty. You will still have to deal with the types you escaped from in the first place won't you? How about your rank? Are they offering you an increase in rank to join? Anywho......good luck. B-) I think you can volunteer to go over as a reservist. No increase in rank thankfully. I can probably keep my rank but if I wind up on the hangar servicing and fixing planes, then I will ask to relinguish my rank(from MCpl) to Corporal, that way I won't have to do the annual evauluation reports on techs underneath me. That was one joy of leaving the military. I don't wish to go back to writing those damn things again. Funny part is Cpl pay is only 5 bucks less per day. extra 5 bucks isn't worth the headache. Another perk with the full time reserves is I do not pay into the pension so that is more money in my paycheque. More time off, more money, perhaps I will get to do some couple vacations a year. Want to take the missus to scotland, vegas, new mexico, switzerland. we'll see. I have the money set aside for Scotland, just don't have the time or babysitters now that her parents went back over to middle east for work again. Mid east countries like having us cdns as their bitches, er I mean slaves. They pay well. Locals don't teach, etc as they are too wealthy to learn what work is. So when the oil runs out, their money runs out, and then they won't know how to live/work like us westerners. -- Edited by dl85vette at 09/12/2009 1:36 PM PDT

Are you building a free stand unit or a wall unit, I would have thought against the wall would be about 12 inches deep and only front door panel, would be fair price for glass, maybe even plexy glass for the door, I have thought about it for some of my collection of diecast cars, we just don't have enough room so they stay on the tops of everything LOL ]:) This is a free standing unit with glass in all the panels (front, rear, sides) 4 feet wide, 2 feet deep and 70 inches tall. That otta hold a few cars. I will install one of those under (kitchen)cabinet floures lights in it also. Don't want incadescent or halogen lamps that are gonna get hot. -- Edited by dl85vette at 09/28/2009 4:00 AM PDT

Have either of you looked into stores going out of business? Might be able to pick up a glass display case cheap, either wall or floor model. Just a thought.... ;\ -- Edited by ginzokid at 09/28/2009 3:57 AM PDT

I know what you mean Pete and no they are hard to come across. Any business I found in that situ, They already had the cases marked sold (probably first dibs on it by a friend of owner) I saw some at sears piled up and asked but they weren't ridding them. On the negative side, those things are usually one peice and heavy as hell. They use real thick particle board. Hopefully mine will turn out. spent 200 bucks just for the oak wood alone. Plus earlier this summer I bought a biscuit joiner, now I had to buy some router bits. And then I needed a belt sander. expensive unit so far. That's probably why they are so expensive in the first place. ]:) -- Edited by barrysfp45 at 09/28/2009 3:57 PM PDT A biscuit joiner? Is this some kind of tool that joins the top and bottom half of the biscuit before you bake it or what? ]:) -- Edited by ginzokid at 09/29/2009 4:07 AM PDT

Need to haul out the orbital sander and start the final sanding on display cabinet. Once that is done I can start assembling the sides together..and then it will start to look like something and feel like I am making progress.

I got tired of waiting for job assignments at the last minute so earlier in week I booked a shift at LHS as he was wanting me for a quite some time. Since this week I put in several hours of some training on cash register and helping with stock and today I worked in back for 2 hours tearing boxes apart (recycling) and cleaning up some, as they just toss boxes in back and then they pile up to no end. my wages go towards store credit. WOOPPIEEE! Just doing the odd saturday or several sats before xmas. Maybe a couple hours in between with tidying up the back.

And you will also get to see the new releases from the manufacturers who send out pre-release notices to the hobby shops so they can pre-order. You'll get about a two week jump on MT cars too. Store credit is great. I used to get 25% off list for all purchases as an employee. Now you will see just how big the mark-up is. It's not really work if you enjoy dealing with the public. Soon you will learn how to "cross-sell". I loved my hobby shop time. Even built a store N scale layout that fit inside one of the display cases. Last time I talked to the guys down there it was still running.....15 years! B-) PS: Any chance at deals for your buddies? (Hint, hint) -- Edited by ginzokid at 11/05/2009 4:03 AM PST

1. I don't even get deals so hard to get any for you guys. 2. LHS just got his flyer for MTL so the website is quicker for seeing new release. 3. When his pre-order pamphlets come in, he shows me them (any in N scale that may interest me) 4. yea, the mark up is gross, I don't know exactly what his percentage is but like everyone else, he gotta make money. This comes full circle to why I buy bulk of my rolling stock & locos from states. I get deals at wine brewing store, just become I'm a regular customer. Even if I have to pay retail, the store credit is nice. I know I gotta work for it but it is more enjoyable than being say a security guard. I don't want to tie up all my saturdays but ight now it will be nice spending a bit of my spare time there working for credit. Once I get a fulltime job then it all may change.

Most hobby shops get a 40% discount on list prices. MT is stingy and usually only gives 25% unless you have a long standing automatic order with them. So figure out what he will be crediting you on a per hour basis and then figure out his normal profit. Are you therefore working for free? I am a devil aren't I......]:)
