Making Water

I'm going to mirror Dave's discussion here as it is a good question. There are many ways to do it and there has been a lot printed on it too. I do suggest a little research and experimentation on your part to see with which method you are most comfortable. I have done it three ways. 1: Paint the plywood base with acrylic paints to look like water, dark blue to black in the middle and lighter as you approach the banks which are then painted earth tones. "Plant" (glue) rocks, old tires, stumps, WS reeds and grass and whatever you feel you want in the water. Then use Envirotex Lite resin to cover it all. Pour it in per the instructions. You can make rough water by brushing the surface before it sets to pick up little wave crests. Plant your boats before it sets too. This is a simplification of my preferred method. 2: Do everything above, but use the WS Realistic Water instead. The old WS water pellets that you melted in a tin can were very yellow when set. I'm glad they came up with the new formula. The WS Water Effects are great for falls and rapids and other places where the surface is not level. 3: Use a fluorescent light ceiling fixture acrylic diffuser, paint it blue, and call it a lake. You can't see through it, but it is good for distant background use. You can plant weeds and rocks on top. 4: A bonus method. I have not done this but have seen water made by just using acrylic paints built up over the background. Start with colors and finish up with clear sealer to give the surface a wet look. It will be interesting to see what shows up in the other group. My best advice as always is to read, experiment and do what you are comfortable with. Anybody else have more water ideas? Did you see the other post about Mike's brother? What is it with you guys and water. Bill. You live in the desert. What do you know about water. Cutting open a barrel cactus will not always yield good drinking water. And what's this about another stone? You are not drinking enough to flush out the system. Doesn't alcohol dissolve kidney stones? Works on rust.... Pete

Pete, The stone is one from the original findings that took away the left kidney. If I use the stones from the left kidney, I have boulders. One was about the size of a shooter marble. The one in the right kidney is not very big at all. CJ, You guys are all a bunch of comedians. Bill p.s. yeah, beer would probably help my whole plumbing system work better!!!!

I wish I still had my stone. They took it from me to do a biopsy on it. I would have proudly used it on the layout! Who says I don't suffer for my Art! Fred - Reminded to go drink number 6 of the 8 glasses of water a day!

I often wonder. If you live in an area with a high mineral content to the water, meaning "hard water", are you more prone to stones than those of us living in relatively mineral free water, "soft water" areas.? So is drinking 6 to 8 glasses of water a good thing or a bad thing? My sure cure is to get the water content I need from 6 to 8 beers a day. It is filtered and pasteurized and has vitamins and grains that are good for you too. Just my take on the situation. The Graff Mudder

My "water" problem was under the layout, not on it! If that had been on top, it would be sawzall time! John Stinkin' like Lysol

Ernie got flooded out again. Natural scenery for his future layout. Marc is building mountains with a potential for lots of run off but no place to go like a lake or river or culverts or outhouse. I'm able to sit up and take nourishment and on occasion, make water in the middle of the night. Actually I hate when that happens, but it comes with age and a lot of martini imbibement. Time to say adieu for the day. The Boss

My river will start as a stream in the mountains, a waterfall will dump it into the river basin, it will be joined by streams and water run off, and it will have one more waterfall to the floor, where ground water will join the WS real water. So I will have real water, and fake real water, joining together in holy matrimony, and then going down the drain! Sounds like a real life marriage to me. CJ
