eBay app won’t update on iOS 15.8.3

Tried to use the app this morning on my iPad Air2 which is limited to iOS 15.8.3 and got the update is required message. No update available of course.

I get that my iPad is old and won’t accept the most recent  iOS, but when I removed the app and reinstalled, I chose the option for installing a previous app version that would work, but end back in the same update required loop…

So this is eBay’s choice not to support older hardware?

Is accessing via Safari my only option then?

@nickdt83 @tugboatnigel If you cannot update past iOS 15 then you can access eBay via a web browser on your device.

See directions and screenshots at the below link if you have iOS 16.

eBay app won’t update on iOS 15.8.3

According to a post on the UK community boards, the latest version of the eBay app requires Android 10 or later, or iOS 17 or later.

If you cannot upgrade your operating system or find an older version of the app that works with your current operating system, you should still be able to use a browser to go to ebay.co.uk instead.

If eBay browser links are opening in the Android version of the app automatically, you can disable that by going to your device Settings: Apps: eBay: Open by default: Opens supported links and choosing "Don't open in the app". iOS users can tap and hold an eBay browser link and choose "Don't open in the app".

Thanks for that: as I thought then, and yet another reason to use something other than eBay…

I have the exact same issue. I was in the technical support webchat for an hour with a customer service agent. They tried their best to help me get an older version of the app, but alas, the “update required” message came up every time. The solution? Just use the browser from now on. Yes, we’ll need to actually buy newer phones/iPads etc. if we want to use the eBay app. Which is just ridiculous, especially seeing as the browser is absolutely horrendous to use in comparison, especially on mobiles. I’m contemplating just not using eBay from now on.

Me too, had enough of all this electronic bullying. First my company email address, email app would not download, then the company chosen pay app, now eBay…… all this cleverness is starting to implode

Thanks for all the responses: it would have been good if eBay had given some kind of prior warning before cancelling those of us with older hardware, but clearly they’re big enough that they don’t need to care about small fry like us….

Appreciate the replies though 😎

Seems like eBay have culled a large number of app users with their latest update!

This is bullying tactics, forcing users of older technology to upgrade. Had this with a Nokia phone when they stopped updating it and the services available starting dropping off.

Couldn’t agree more! Getting thoroughly p#ssed off with eBay generally, and this latest one is the kick in the wedding tackle to end a very long relationship.

There is a workaround, as the app itself is still functional, just blocked from use by the pop up.

With the app open and the pop up displayed, open safari and log in to eBay. If you see a banner at the top of the page saying ‘use the app’ or something similar, click it, and you will be swapped back to the app, but now without the pop up. Clicking the ‘my eBay’ icon can also work. Basically any Acton that prompts safari to send you back to the app.
