Help!! Exactly what is this, can you tell?

I'm wondering if some one can tell me exactly what this is.  Some kind of coral, I'm assuming... 

Keywords and age would be a huge help...

Looks like bamboo coral (which is almost always dyed).

It comes out of China. It starts out white and is dyed red.

Yep. However, have also seen some very lovely beads of the same material that has been bleached (no color).

Judy, I have some like yours I am going to list.  Check out free form coral necklace on here.  Some are very expensive and some are not, according to the types of coral.  Maybe you can compare yours with a few on here  and look them up.
