I have no idea? HAS A GREAT VINTAGE TRANSFER ON THE FRONT AND A SLOT FOR A NAIL TO HOLD IT ON THE BACK

It's for a big box of kitchen matches, used to light the stove in the good old days.

Looks like a match holder, would be placed on the wall next to the coal or wood stove had a large book of matches inside....

Agreeing with others:  Match holder.  I actually remember one of those hanging near the old stove in my aunt's kitchen.

There are plenty of these out there to compare measurements, since you still didn't say how big it is!
