Cause & cure for fingernail split down the middle

Suzifrady....I could have written your story word for word.  My mother and I both have had the same problem nail, all our lives...same finger, same hand! It's been a pain in the butt all these years....the darn thing catches on everything, snagging clothes, etc.  Doctors said it's hereditary, not much we can do.  I'm 71 now, and I'm just thankful I have my health!  Best of luck to all of you.

Cause & cure for fingernail split down the middle

I agree with you, because, I injuries my right thumb nail splitting wood 3 years ago. I jammed my fingernail so hard that it left a permanent split down my fingernail underneath the nail bed, not down the middle more towards one side. It's annoying, I have to cut and file my nail when it starts to grow so it won't catch on anything. I have look all over the internet to find a solutions and found nothing, that works, so I just deal with it. I will try the vitiamen A and E and see if that helps and will restore it,  but I think the trauma to my nail from me jamming it so hard 3 years ago may or may not improve. Thanks for the advice.

Cause & cure for fingernail split down the middle

I finally cured my split nail.  I've had a split thumbnail that snags on everything if it grows out just a little (for years!).  I can see the faint white line all along my thumbnail to the top of the nail.  I've been on a paleo diet, take supplements, and nothing worked.  I started Great Lakes Gelatin (for a year), the recommended dose, and it did nothing.  Then my naturopath said Neocell collagen works for his patients, so I started taking it daily, more than the recommeneded tablespoon a day since I'm older (I'm 53).  I took 3T a day for 6 months and then noticed my nail is harder and no longer split.  The faint line is still there though, but at least I can let the nail grow and it matches my other nails, finally!

Careful on the superglue... it may be alright but who knows? Any tests been done? Any known side effects? It will dehydrate the split area very rapidly... Superglue is a cyanoacrylate.

funny that all of your whole story is exactly as mine.  Left thumb; manicure; gel overlay; not family hereditary...please let me know if you find anything with the tea bag.  Thanks a million!

Like you, I read all the responses.  My problem is also both ring fingers.  I am 78 yrs old & never had this problem till I injured my shoulder in an accident 2 yrs ago.  I asked Dr I had at the time & he just said to super glue till it grew back.  It worked for awhile but has started again.  I asked another Dr &he didn't seem to know.  Said it was probably some vitamin deficiency.  so many people have this condition & I'm sure we all thought we were the only one.  sicillian

The vertical split has NOTHING to do with back or nerve issues. It's caused by trauma to the nail bed, and because the underlying structural base of the nail is damaged, it will continue to have cracks in the same place, no matter how may times the nail grows out. Continued exposure to water, hand sanitizers containing alcohol, and cleaning products will further weaken and dry out nails.

I have to agree and say it's a vitamin deficiency. I never had the problem until about a year ago when I became 'partially' vegan and also stopped taking my vitamins consistently. One day I was getting a manicure and the nail lady told me I should take a multivitamin and it will go away. I was a bit skeptical and put it off for a few months. I recently started taking a liquid multivitamin called Source of life made by Natur's Plus and I promise you guys my split nail problem is gone. Not only is it gone but my nails, in general, are super healthy and look great (they remind me of my nails when I was pregnant). All in all I really do believe it's a lack of vitamins. It worked for me so I just really wanted to share and I hope it works for you as well. Good luck!

I am a man and have exactly the same issue. I have now had it for years and there is something growing under the cracked line of the nail. Everytime I cut it now it hurts heaps.

Biotin helps strengthen nails, and purportedly low iron is also the cause of splits. I did silk wraps on my nail until it grew out while taking supplements. Silk wraps used to be common before acrylic and gels. It is tissue silk (sold by the yard in fine fabric stores or online) and a good super glue (Crazy Glue). Stores like Sally Beauty Supply sells the silk for silk wraps in a stick-on form, and also the glue for it. The glue is often old and dried from their inventory, since few do silk wraps anymore, so I just use a good super glue with a pointed applicator (which most are - narrowest point applicator is ideal).

I forgot to add that they also make a fine powder which makes it last longer - IDB Nail Filler Powder. Helps thicken the area and fills any crevices. 🙂

Cause & cure for fingernail split down the middle

My chiropractor saved my life. Was the only long term fix compared to the near dozen other specialists(MDs) I saw. No one healthcare profession is perfect but to blanket an entire profession with your one life experience is very poor advice. Also to say they will say anything to keep you coming back is bogus. I don't know who you have been too but don't condemn and entire profession based on your experience. I went to an endodontist for a root canal that nearly destroyed me. All endodontist must be bad. How about the Vascular surgeon who nearly killed my dad? All vascular surgeons bad? I don't think so.

Cause & cure for fingernail split down the middle

I too have this issue. It's my thumb nail. Coincidentally, my father had the same issue. Interesting that many others on this forum share this situation. I have always had strong nails that grow fast and look very healthy. In my 30's, my thumb nail began to split from the white tip to just above the quick. I tried many of the things others have mentioned (except artificial nails, lotions, or nail oils) and it didn't prevent this issue. The ONE THING that has helped are collagen tablets. I began taking them 4 months ago - never missing a dose. I have not had any cracks on that thumb nail and the ridge down the center is smooth in the new growth section. I trim my nails every wk (they have always grown really fast) so I can see the new growth from the last 4 months quite easily. Things are trending in the right direction. I have always eaten very clean and healthy, exercise 5x a wk (for yrs) and take supplements including biotin - for yrs. Still - I developed this issue with no injury to the nail bed. With so many of us reporting that one of our parents have this same condition - I am beginning to think there probably is a genetic link here. Fortunately, many genetic issues CAN be affected by food and life style choices. I suspect this is a nutritional deficiency (despite a healthy varied diet) caused by how my body processes/absorbs nutrients. Boosting my collagen consumption is helping me. There are many products out there. I buy mine at Costco - Youtheory brand Collagen tablets (product # 11673449.) These are very expensive when found in other vitamin stores but reasonably priced ($19.00) at Costco. I hope this works for others struggling with this problem. This supplement will not affect the existing nail, but will possibly help you grow NEW stronger nail tissue that does not split.
