I had this problem until very recently and I think I found the cause. I looked up the reason a few weeks ago because several of my fingernails kept splitting. Most of the answers said it was due to wetting and drying of the nails. I found this hard to believe because I have always washed my hands a lot (I am now 64) and never had this problem until a few months ago. I have arthritis and someone told me to try glucosamine sulphate. I used it for 3/4 months plus omega 3 fish oil capsules. It seemed to help but I stopped taking the glucosamine a few weeks ago. My arthritis hasn't got any worse and my nails have stopped splitting. The fish oil also counteracts my constipation due to the painkillers I take.

Yes I do, after I injured the nail of my left pointer finger. That was a few months ago & like you, I need to file it as it grows out or it catches on things. I'm going to try painting it with polish. Has anyone done this?
I do. I have very thin nails. My nails rarely grow to any length at all because they break and chip. They bend and split very easily, and they always have done. Using nail hardener polish (Sally's) helps to prevent that. I also file as the nail grows.
Recently my thumbnail split at the side. It was really painful and frustrating for a couple of weeks but I got it under control with filing and nail hardener.

I have 4 crushed Cervical disks. And yes this explains it. See the chiro. as well. As often as I can afford too. Two hr. ride to her, but well worth it...

I realize this is a really old "reply" but thanks for the comment about seeing the line of the split. I had never looked for this before, and sure enough, there it is! My thumbnail started cracking a couple of years ago and the only thing I've found to repair it for a short time is Gloves, a product called Kur which is a wonderful oil I apply multiple times a day, and keeping my hands hydrated. The instant the crack reappears, I cover it with a bandaid until I can get things back under control. The fact this hasn't been a lifelong problem makes me think there's something nutritional going on.

I have suffered this problem for many years and was told you will always have ths problem. Well I tried everything from super glue to a gel cover and everthing inbetween and nothing worked. It has quite an inpact on everthing you do as it catches on everthing including your hair, and any new clothes soon looked old as they had so many picks on them. Well never give up hope! I jabbed my nail very badly in the supermarket a few months ago and began to notice the split seemed a little less after a few weeks until it started to mend. I now have a nail without the split but I do have a small red line just beneath the nail tip but I'm hopeful that it will disapear once the nail has grown enough to be cut off. I just hope this is the end of my problem. Hope you all find your own cure and soon, best of luck.

I have this problem.I hit my fingernail on a metal fixture at work and it caused the nail to split down the middle, from that time on it has done this. it can only grow out a little bit and I have to cut it very short if I dont I catch it on my clothing and the fear of ripping it futher is scary.

Just curious as to whether taking the vitamins cured the problem for you. I have several fingernails that this has been happening to that I think started after Chemo 20+ years ago. Thanks

I used to be a nail biter, but now I do grow them to a certain length then I find they start to split on the side. I've been buying Sally Hansen nail fibre and sealer, not sure it's working. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated thank you

Did you ever find a solution? I have the same issue?
