I have this print titled “When will you marry me” or “will you marry me” by Paul Gauguin. There are many I find and very affordable. I was wondering what is meant by Made by Saake in Oakland CA. I’m not really finding anything about this place. Just curious what is meant by made by. Is it the frame, the print? Since there are many prints and repros out there by different artists, could it have been a artist at Saake that made a print of this? Was this a studio? The title on bottom has Paul Gauguin name spelt wrong as when I googled it, it came up with Paul Gauguin and yes, it was associated with this print. I didn’t notice that it was signed at first. Apparently, he was not famous in his lifetime as a artist but has become famous due to his painting being sold after his death. I was drawn to the print due to the colors, not knowing who the artist was. The print reminds me of Asian panel ink, sort of pearlescent. I am hoping someone is familiar with Saake business and what they did, how long they existed, etc. By researching other prints with the Made by Saake label, not much info is provided who they were. By looks of the back, seems pretty recent. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I think that Made by Saake refers to the frame only. Saake Studio in Oakland, California was famous for their frames and as a framing studio at one point.
Just my humble opinion. Hopefully others will chime in

Saake was an Oakland picture framer and had nothing to do with the making of the print.

Thank you jameshen1 ! After your response, I googled and added studio to saake. I read it was also a gallery at one point and began on Telegraph in Oakland Ca. I never saw a label that read "Made by" on a print before so I wasn't sure what was meant by that. I couldn't find when it went out of business though. My label looks so recent. Much appreciated, very helpful !

Thank you sonomabarn67 ! Now I am curious about the print. No dots and I can't believe the artist name is spelt incorrectly. Nicely done though. Appreciate your clarification.

Now that there is a close up I believe it to be a lithograph.

Look at the phone number, that's an OLD frame.

It's an address, not a phone number: 375 13th St.
Saake had an earlier address on Telegraph, so figuring out when it moved would help with a date range for the frame.

The name of the original painting and the name of the man who painted are both wrong, which must certainly lower whatever value it might have.
The name of the painting in Tahitian is Nafea faa ipoipo? The artist is Paul Gauguin. (The name of the painting in French is Quand te maries-tu? and in English When Will you Marry?)
You said you did not see dots when you looked at it with a magnifier. What did you see? If it's a traditional, non-mechanical, lithograph, you'll see a sort of stippled pattern all over but any dots are rather small, vary somewhat in size, are in no set pattern.
Graphics Atlas is a great resource when trying to determine what sort of print or reproduction one has:

Here's a link to the full-size image in @pacr_2188,'s closeup in this reply. It's quite a high-resolution image, so the experts night be able to get a better idea of how the print was made. If you click this link to open it, and then click on it again, it will enlarge even more.

It looks to me as though it has been printed in paper with a distinct woven texture, possibly to look more like a painting on canvas.

This is the name of this print. Spelt wrong too? Lol.

Thank you lacemaker3. It is on paper and it has a pearlescent look to it on the cream color background like asian screen panels. I don't see any uniformed dots when I look through a loupe.

Thank you maxine*j ! I don't see uniformed dots when I look through a loupe. Not sure of the name of this print but its doesn't seem to be spelt the way you spelt it. Maybe it says something else?

Same work of art. Same name. Variation in how Tahitian is written / rendered.

I don't know if it has already been mentioned but this is a stone lithograph, unless everything I've learned has been wrong.
