Europa C&O #439 Brandenburg-Salzwedel Hohlpfennig 1440-70 -Silver

21 Jan 2020:  Greetings to all coin collectors, where-ever you might be.  Heron

is pleased to report acquisition of Europa Central & Oest issue Nr 439.  This is

a small but neat item and does NOT appear to have been underground for several

centuries.   It is VF for sure!

Note:  This coin is called a Hohlpfennig.  It is Silver.   Coin is round and 'dish'

shaped.   Appears as a 'small dish' with design on 'obverse'.

Note: The design is called 'Halber Adler und Schlussel'.   This means half an

Eagle and a key.   The half of eagle is to left as viewing the coin.  The

key is a whole key and to the right as viewing the coin.

Note: This coin was issued sometime between 1440 and 1470.  It was issued

in the name of Frederick II Margraviate of Brandenburg (for Salzwedel).

Note: 1112 the Castle of Salzwedel was first documented.

Note: 1233 First mention as a town as part of the Margraviate of Brandenburg.

Note: 1317 Salzwedel became part of Stendahl but some coins still issued with

             the 'arms of Salzwedel'.

Note: 1701 - Salzwedel became part of Kingdom of Prussia.

Note: 1815 - Salzwedel was part of Saxony which was a Province of Prussia.

Note: 2008 - The name was officially changed to Hansestadt Salzwedel.

                           (City of the Hanseatic League).

Note:  This coin measures 16mm diam.

**Another interesting small coin of Holy Roman Empire.  And a Hohlpfennig

also.  (Hohl means Hollow in English.  And the coins do have a 'hollow' space

in them).   And a nice Silver coin in VF grade!   Helping el Heron on the road

to reach 450 different issues.   This collecting hobby is a super great one.

And for a lifetime!  Such a deal!. **
