What's a Galley Proof Edition? Fe Fi FOE Comes is listed that way but I've never seen the term before. Does that mean it isn't bound? Only loose pages?

sessrymnir: A "galley proof" is the printers' first draft.

Originally, they were overlong pages, unbound,
printed on one side only.

They don't do it that way anymore. The pages are shorter.

But, nowadays, they often put bindings on them
and use them as ARCs [advance reading copies]

The press is collectible: Mosher Press, although the date is later than Mosher himself was active:

Satnrose: the book was published in 1934, 74 years ago. I doubt if an artist currently alive illustrated it. Instead I think it was the grandmother, referred to in the post you gave.

There are a few copies on ABE, note you incorrectly spelled the title (it should be an "L" instead of an "I".

Ask any question about any book Part II

Hello Satnrose,

I have Hans Andersen’s Fairy Tales
Illustrated by Kay Nielsen
George H. Doran Company, New York
1924

It has all 1st Edition points;
Original publisher’s black cloth with decorative art deco front color paste down, silver titles to spine, original pictorial end papers, Colophon with the initials "GHD" on the copyright page, (supposedly 1st edition point for Doran) as well as 12 tipped in plates, each page with a decorative rule & vine border across the top.

BUT, this copy has a "B" on the copyright page and a gift inscription dated 1940.

A previous sale of this 1st edition on ebay did not show photos of the entire copyright page to compare it to.

Is this a second printing? I would hate to list it as a 1st if it isn't.

Thank you in advance

I must admit that I don't know,
and could not find a definitive answer.

Hopefully, one of the children's experts will chime in.

tealsky:

You don't have to worry about having a 1940 edition-Doran merged with Doubleday, Page to become Doubleday, Doran in 1928.

I've never felt that the letters on a Doran copyright page had anything to do with the printing, but I don't have a definitive reference for the first printing of this title.

Thank you satnrose & oldbookshopnj, for your generous replies. Do you think it's safe to list this as a 1st Edition or should I wait for Zlinda to come along?

Elsa's Mission Contribution
Augustana Book Concern
Rock Island IL 1923

Here is my question: The book has very few illustrations. Two have a printed signature, one has a mark with an R in a circle.

The name is Ruth Grafstrom. There is a Ruth Sigrid Grafstrom that illustrated for fashion magazines. No illustrator name is noted--not on worldcat.

The signaure is printed, no middle initial. Ruth Sigrid Grafstrom signed her fashion art in cursive. The timing is right though. 1905-1986.

It might add value, it might not. I don't know how else to search.
