Indexing is the process of adding new listings to the search, so users can find those items.
It can take up to 24 hours for new listings to be indexed and appear in searches. If you revise a listing before it appears, it goes to the back of the line once again.
It does not always take the full 24 hours, but if you list an item you should not count on being able to find it for at least 24 hours.

Indexing is the process of a computer finding and recording all the searchable terms in your listing and adding them to an index so a search can find them.
ETA: Your listing is "posted" immediately (unless you chose the option to schedule the posting time) but cannot be found except by item number until it is indexed.
