starting bid price change

So yesterday I started watching an item with a starting bid of $54.99.  No one else was watching, no one else had bid.  Today the same item still with no bids and me the only one watching, has had the starting bid price increased to $99.99.  Can the seller do this randomly?  I find it very uncool.

Yes, the seller can make any revisions up until someone bids.  It's their item.
