seller demands return shipping even though I offered free shipping on purchase

I have sold a pair of Merrell boots. The boots had no indication that there was any problem. My pictures were very clear and in my description, I stated that they were in good condition, but had been worn. I go over the items before shipping, just in case.

The buyer has contacted me saying that there is dry rot in the stitching, that a piece has come off and the boots are defective. I requested some pictures and sure enough, a small piece on the detail has come off.

I offered a refund- less shipping- as I offer free shipping. When I stated that neither of us know how this occured whether it was dry rot, or occured in shipping, the buyer has become very aggressive in response. Finally, he stated that it was like this when he opened the box and as the item is defective, he is not paying return shipping.

He has threatened to open a dispute with ebay saying that they will give him his refund AND shipping.
