What do the numbers and stars mean that are shown next to a bidders ID?

Hello - I am new to eBay and just entered my first bid.  I saw info listed next to the competing bidders ID's that I would like to understand.  For example, what does it mean when I see something like:  
    i**d (1218 RedStar) or

    e**c (36 YellowStar)?

I understand the first 4 digits shown above are the system generated anoymous ID's for the other bidders, but what do the numbers and stars inside the parenthesis mean?
