Shipping a listing that has more than one package-using the shipping calculator + Global Shipping

Is there any way to get the shipping calculator to account for a item that requires more than one package. There is no way to combine the items in a single large box -it would be the equivalent of shipping a pair of skis and a large beach ball.
I can fudge it by adding the weight and volume but this is not accurate for all areas, and does not work for the Global Shipping Program. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.
