Setting up 2-factor authentication w/app - Issues

trying to add 2-factor authentication to my account and want to use Google Authenticator which I already use for other applications.   I get to the eBay security page where this is configured and I keep getting an error a the first step!   I never get to the point of selecting the provider or scanning a QR code.   The eBay page tells me there's an error and I see the spinning wait symbol.

And when using the eBay app on iPhone I don't even get the option to add 2-step verification with an authenticator app.   

Any thoughts?

From the app go thru: account -- settings -- sign in/security -- 2FA

Ebay  give you a few options: push thru app/ text code to your either phone/email
