What are the downsides to changing my ebay username?

For thirty days your profile will have a little icon indicating that your name has been changed; you will not be able to change the name again for those thirty days.

Users that have your "items for sale" bookmarked or who know you by your username only may no longer be able to easily find your listings. Those that have you as a Saved Seller should still be able to find you. I believe that many links such as those on feedback pages will be updated to reflect the new name, so users may be able to find you that way, if they think of it.

If you later decide to change your name back, there is no guarantee that the old name will still be available.
