Someone recently created an eBay account using my email address and eBay refuses to do anything about it. I have had my Gmail account for at least 10 years and they were able to sign up to eBay using the googlemail.com domain instead of the gmail.com one.
This concerns me as I now receive constant emails for this other person and I feel like it's an attempt to collect data on me. Google has stated that most people no longer use the googlemail.com domain and opt for gmail.com, but gmail.com users will still receive an email if someone sends it to their name with googlemail.com.
So clearly there is no error on Googles side. It's just an option of which domain you want to append to your username. The problem begins with companies like eBay who treat identical usernames with gmail.com and googlemail.com as two different email addresses.
eBay's general customer service agents keep telling me I need to contact Google but clearly, eBay should never have let someone sign up a new account with the same email as me. This is an eBay issue, not Google. Can anyone give guidance on contacting a more knowledgeable customer service to address this? Right now it feels like the only option may be to start reaching out to BBB, Consumer Affairs, or other watchdog agencies.
