Multiple bidders using automatic bids for the same item

I have a question about automatic bids.  I'm wondering what happens if two or more bidders choose to use automatic bids to win an item. It would appear that they would keep competing with each other up to the bidders' respective maximums. Would the item simply default to the maximum bid set by the bidder who had set the highest maximum bid limit? (This is assuming no one placed a bid manually that was higher than this.) What if two automatic bidders chose the same maximum bidding price (with no additional competition)?

If the maximum bid is tied, the one who placed the max bid first is the winner.
