Lack of return of an item

Hi,

 

we have an issue with a buyer who claimed our dvd player was not working properly, so we refunded him in good faith but we wanted our dvd player back.

 

He wrote us back saying that he threw it back so now we don't believe this is true as if it was really broken, he should asked for our permission to throw it away, and we never said so.

 

When we shipped it,  we checked it out and worked just fine.

 

So, what do you do in these cases, please?
