Including "note" with listing

Hi,  I like to use the note feature to include my own inventory control #, not something the custmoer needs to see.   I have been able to do this by going to an EXISTING listing and clicking "add/edit note" and then put in my number.   It would sure be nice to add the note during the initial listing process rather than this time-consuming two-step process. Am I missing something?
