I cannot mark items with questions as answered

I have an item which has no questions, just the buyer sending me a message thanking me. There used to be an option to mark an item as "question answered". It is no longer there. I've searched high and low, saw something about expanding the column with the drop down menu which I did, and there's still no option to mark it as such. If I click on "answer question" my entire message page opens up with no actual email to respond to (and there wasn't a question anyway). This is driving me nuts because I keep seeing the marker telling me that 1 item needs to have a question answered. Any help would be appreciated.
