How to handle a return for shipping damaged item, both with the buyer and USPS

I shipped an item to a buyer who received it broken.  The box was damaged by USPS.  I need help with how to arrange the return and refund with the buyer and also how to file a claim with USPS.  I just read that I am responsible for the return shipping too.  How do I arrange that?  This is my first damaged shipped item.  Thanks for your help!

If it was insured and you want to file an insurance claim, refund the buyer and have them hang on to the item and package so it can be inspected.

Ask buyer for a few photos and file a claim at usps.com

Have a great day.

Thank you.  The buyer has already sent me pictures and I will, of course, refund their purchase.  However, if I file the claim will I need the item back, or will pictures suffice?   Will I have to refund the buyer's shipping cost--I'm guessing the answer is yes--and if so, can I include that cost in the USPS claim?
