How the heck to make items temporarily unavailable for sale when I don't have a store

Im planning to go out of town, how to make items unavailable for sale while i'm away?  I see the vacation message, but I want to temporarily put items on hold.

Why is this so hard to find how to do!!!!

I read where one poster said to END the item, but I'll lose interested parties......and won't i have to pay a re-list fee?

Surely someone else has this problem.  (Those without stores)

If not a store owner, you need to either extend the handling time, which will still leave the listing live, or end the listings and relist later (fee if no free credits). Or you can enable the out-of-stock option and set quantity to zero, which will also hide the listing.
