(Sorry this is a bit long)
Hello, I sold a laptop on eBay that they buyer said was not working so (as a good seller) I selected the "Accept return" button to get the laptop back. I ensured that my shipping and return addresses were correct before selecting this option and eBay sent a return label to the buyer.
I then received an email that eBay refunded the buyer, but I had NOT received the item back. I did a little research (via UPS) and the item was delivered to an address that I lived at over 2 years ago and is over 500 miles from my current residence.
When I asked eBay what happened they said:
"It shows here on our system that the item was purchased on March 15, 2021 where in we follow the address on file. Upon review on your account, you just updated the return address on March 24, 2021 (prior to the return request being granted) when the return case has already been made. These are the reasons why your old address was followed.
Yes, I ensured prior to a label being sent that my RETURN address was correct for where I currently reside. How could ANY customer of eBay know what policies that you follow regarding purchase date if it is not communicated to customers on your website? I ensured that my return details were correct prior to selecting the checkbox to accept a return and have eBay issue a label. I was given no audit to even see the label where I could have corrected it had I seen it.
Then eBay tells me, "It's best for you to do is to contact the current owner of the old address you have on account to try and retrieve the package." How do you even do this (in the USA)? I live over 500 miles from Virginia and have no idea who lives in my old apartment. Can't eBay request for UPS to retrieve the package? Since eBay sent the label, I can't even ask UPS to do that.
I am a total loss and need assistance as both the laptop that I sold is missing in another city and eBay has taken away the funds from the sale.
Where can I turn to and get assistance for this? Surely eBay does not just drop all responsibility to sellers in this manner? And advice/assistance that the community could provide will be greatly appreciated.
