HELP!! On Variation Listing

I am frustrated!  I don't think I am understanding how to do a variations listing.

I filled out the information and it allowed me to list 12 items.

I put a variable, but not sure exactly what that meant.

I added the items, the prices, description, photos, etc.

I posted the listing, but the drop down menu doesn't pull up the photo that belongs to the item name.

The photo doesn't change at all, no matter what you click on in the drop down menu.

I ended my listings due to an "error" in the listing for now.

I hope this makes sense. I know I am doing something wrong, but can't figure it out.  It's either the directions or me (HA!).

I am technically challenged, seriously. I need something simple.  I am not a veteran seller.

I did look at a spreadsheet sort of helping aid, but I don't used spreadsheets in my daily life, so I am clueless.

Please help -- I have buyers asking me if I am going to relist my items.
