Global Internationl Shipping when you list Free Shipping!!

This option is automatically selected and I keep un selecting it.  I figured it was a setting and started researching it.  In what I'm reading I can't figure out the benifit to do global shipping when you select free shipping.  I don't want to offer free shipping outside the U.S.  and have to pay for it but it's defaulted to be selected( Gloabal Shipping).  So that leads me to the question.   If I offer free shipping and keep global shipping to I get charged international shipping.  I feel like the way I'm reading it that no I just pay to sen to a U.S. facitily but I just want to make sure.   Thanks for any answers.
