“Cancel Offer” for buyers

Why is eBay the last platform to provide a “cancel offer” option for buyers? This whole, contact seller & ask for permission to cancel the offer , is NONSENSE!! It’s our $, we should be able to control when & where we spend it!! eBay, FIX THIS!!!!

You are in control. Since offers, bids, and purchases are binding contracts to pay for your items, don't make offers, bid on items, or buy them unless you know you want them.

This is what you agree to each time you transact on eBay. Here's the policy:

Nothing you said, equals “in control”… If someone sends an offer & they decide they don’t want that, should be lot easier to cancel instead of them wasting us sellers time! I would rather a buyer be able to cancel on their own, instead of messaging me with some long excuse as to why they want me to cancel it! Asking the seller is not “control”… & nothing is binding on eBay! **bleep** contract or not… All a seller can do is cancel the item if failure to pay! Be lot let hassle for seller if buyer had that option! Plus, eBay is legit the last platform on earth who doesn’t have more buyer friendly tools!! Get with the program eBay! Stop wasting sellers time!!

Sorry, it sounded like you were asking as a buyer, not a seller.

Some sellers don't want to accept cancellations (or can't accept them in some cases when orders go into their ordering system as soon as they come in, generating shipping labels, and sending the order through to their dropshippers or shipping location). Furthermore, if buyers thought they could cancel transactions willy-nilly, it would wreak havoc for sellers, not to mention disrupt the marketplace for serious buyers.

So while you may think it would be easier for you, there are millions and millions of sellers who would not agree.

eBay's policy has always been that you pay for your wins. Since they make the rules, we sellers have to abide by them if we want to use this site.

If a buyer cancels an offer before it’s  accepted… It’s not wreaking havoc at all!! Actually saving sellers time, & labor!! I don’t get paid to waste my time to cancel an offer for a buyer… The buyer needs that option prior to acceptance… Win win for both parties…

This is eBay's policy. I'm just trying to help you look at this from different angles.

There are already multiple ways to enter a transaction:

  • Buy It Now
  • Buy It Now with immediately payment required
  • Auction
  • Make an Offer
  • Respond to an Offer

Making cancellation rules that are different for the various transaction types is not practical. Buyers won't remember which is which and the result will be more confusion and unpaid items, not less.

What a buyer is supposed to remember is that if he bids and wins, accepts an offer, has an offer accepted, or clicks Buy It Now, he is expected to pay. No exceptions. If the seller WANTS to accept a cancellation he can - it's up to the seller.

BTW, eBay is slowly rolling out a requirement for buyers to post a payment method before they make an offer so that if accepted, the payment automatically goes through.

I don’t get paid to waste my time to cancel an offer for a buyer…

If that is your position, you can choose not to make/accept offers at all. You can list as Fix Price with Immediate Payment Required. You've sold 3 items this month and the month is more than half over. How much time are you spending cancelling accepted offers that it's causing you this much extra work?
