Automatic Bidding: How quickly does eBay raise your bid at end of auctions?

I just was outbid.  Well, OK!  Sucks ...  

The Bid History page shows that someone beat me, on a low-price item, by 50 cents, * only *5* seconds later*. 

My bid was placed with only 20 seconds remaining in this auction.  What else could I do??  How long could I wait??   I could not respond fast enough!!! 

This is sort of unfair.  The winner shows up in Dark Gray type, so it prob was an Auto-Bid.  No one can beat an Auto-Bid, Right?? 

How fast does eBay update 2 or 3 Auto-Bidders against one another???   Every  5 seconds or a tenth-of a second or What?  

Does Auto Bidding just run up the price, even past the "Auction End Time", indefinitely???   

Do they just max out each buyer's bid, until the Highest Bid Price wins ??  So, there is really not an End-Time for an auction where multiple Auto-Bids are competing??
