Android app failure in last minute of auction

I can't begin to describe how infuriating it was to have watched an item for a week, only to have the app seize up during the last minute of the auction. I went to refresh the page in an area of excellent cell phone coverage on a new phone that has worked flawlessly to make sure everything was synced.

Instead, I got the swirling circle, but the auction page never loaded. This was in the eBay app for Android. 

I exited the app and went back in, with the same result.  I wonder, could this be a hack on other bidders parts? I find it unlikely that eBay's servers could be overloaded by a few last minute bids. Is this normal?
