Can anyone tell me how to determine if these earrings are old or made to look old? Is the stone amber? What does the mark R 2 mean? So many questions!
I have found some information online, but I don't know if it is accurate. Is this true, "Amber will become charged with static electricity when rubbed with a soft cloth"?
I did rub one of the stones with a cloth, and it did become charged with static electricity.

Those are amber earrings. Yes, Amber becomes charged when rubbed against hair or cloth. They are oxidized (most likely with liquid sulphur) to make the design stand out.
They are not very old but could easily be vintage. They are not antique

Hello. Butterscotch amber mined from the Baltic Sea area. Using magnification, you might be able to see grains of sand or life-forms embedded in the amber - very rare for butterscotch amber, but it does happen. Take a look. Pretty settings of unknown age.
