Amazon Key has arrived. Will eBay follow suit?

Frankly, I refuse to let any carrier do this, but over all, do you folks think ebay should and will do the same?

On a related note Amazon has this service

Id LOVE to see Ebay find a way to get something similar, my mail carrier has a tendency to "air mail" packages over my fence rather than walk 15 feet to my porch

Re: Amazon Key has arrived. Will eBay follow suit?

When I was a kid in the 70s, one of my neighbors had a wooden bin on his front porch with a hasp and a padlock, and a sign that said "Please leave packages in box and close lock."

I think it's pretty depressing that we needed to wait almost fifty years for Amazon's technological wizardry to solve that problem for the rest of us.

Oh BTW.. if you develop a relationship with your UPS/USPS carriers (i.e., learn their names, give them a tip for Christmas, etc.) they will usually do this for you anyway, especially if you have a vehicle or side room that they can access without taking too much time out of their route. I know it's a lot more personal than signing up for an Amazon gadget and some people aren't into that, but that's how I've been doing it.

If you are not personally escorted in by either myself, my husband, or our daughter, our 125 lb. Giant GSD will make lunchmeat out of you. The Lab, Boxer and Chihuahua mix will just lick you to death.

I've got a Maine Coon that would knock over any person coming in the house as he (large MC) makes a wild stampede to get out the door.

I tried that, when she continued to throw my packages, I gave up. I think the breaking point was when Id ordered an autographed book for my FIL for Xmas and she tossed it in a snowbank.

Everyone on the street has had issues with her.  Now Joe the FedEx guy is great, he brings along raw hide bones for the dogs on his route, and always leaves my packages in the greenhouse if Im not home.

Since eBay does not distribute items, I don't see how they could follow suit.

that remains to be unproven, as suspected in another thread by myself and many others, I feel they do distribute many of their highlighted "deals" covertly.

It also remains unproven that you are not a member of an alien race sent to earth to sow discontent about eBay in order to depress prices on the secondary resale market making it easier for them to get a monopoly used clothing across the galaxy.

Re: Amazon Key has arrived. Will eBay follow suit?

Something i havent seen anyone talking about all that much for this is that I would feel sorry for the poor minumum wage mope who has to do these deliveries and is now expected to actually WALK INTO STRANGERS HOUSES. For every delivery. What could possibly go wrong with that?

People are talking about how the delivery people might be predators or thieves - and maybe they could although we can be optimists and assume that they would be screened - but the guy or girl who is actually down on the street and expected to open up the house and walk in to drop the package has no idea who or what they will run into at every single house. Im waiting for the first one to get shot by some elderly homeowner. Suddenly the job of delivering boxes to porches gets a whole lot riskier. Good thing that their pay will rise to match the added risk. It will - right?

Another example of Amazon suckering the media into giving them free advertiing. An impossible idea; but it sounds good to the fake news people. Suppose you have a security system. This would mean you'd have to disable it for one or two days. Not going to happen.

I guess they're not getting any more exposure out of the drones delivering your package hoax. Maybe the news media figured out the drone would have to drop the package on the steps in front of your brownstone and it'd roll down the steps and get kicked to corner where it gets run over ( on purpose ) by the UPS truck.

I don't see the harm in it, there are cameras around and it's not at night time.

If you had read the article, you have to have a smart lock system and the amazon security cam, and it gives the carrier a one time access code to get in.

Anything like that is hackable, and hacks WILL happen.

If you had thought about what I said, it might have occurred to you that there are folks out that have a security system in their home which would have to be disabled to allow the door to be opened by the Amazon key. If not disabled the security system would trigger.

They could get a program with carriers or institute it with the valet

In theory I suppose.

But the chances of eBay developing or licensing technology like Amazon Key is small.

And the chances of an eBay buyer actually buying an item from a Valet is small.

And the chances of an eBay buyer having a compatible security system is small.

And the chances of an eBay buyer actually wanting this service for his item is small.

I don't think even Amazon is going to find much interst in this for anything other than maybe groceries from Whole Foods. It's going to be like the Amazon drones - a press release about a service that is probably years away from being delivered, if ever.

You know- I think it’s a cool idea.

I don’t have a need for it now because I work in my home, but years ago when I was working 65-70 hrs a week out of my house, I would’ve loved this service.

Re: Amazon Key has arrived. Will eBay follow suit?

Does this new scheme mean that Amazon has given up on the Drone scheme???
