I thought I would make this topic a bit more visible .... This previous thread morphed into a thread on finding images of Christian saints on coins:

For those with an interest in the designs of medieval and Renaissance era European coins, you may enjoy browsing through it.

In the spirit of some other threads, there is also a running list, which (after some rearrangement) looks like this, and the encouragement of readers to add to it!:

Another saint I have seen for the first time on a coin ... St. Lucy.

Saint Lucy was a young Catholic woman martyred in the city of Siracusa (Syracuse) on the island of Sicily during the Roman persectuion of Diocletian in 304 a.d.  Her popularity had already spread from Italy to England by the 7th century. 

A late medieval legend has her eyes being gouged out before her execution, so her iconography by Renaissance times shows her holding a plate with her eyeballs on it  

The coin is a 1633 lira of Duke Charles I (Gonzaga) of Mantova (reverse has legend and coat of arms).  For auction elsewhere.  As you can see, the iconography is consistent with the times (she is holding a cup with two eyeballs):

9 Nov 2017 - Hola TDZ.... Your post of 21 Dec 2914 1509 hrs:   Heron was searching through this 'topic' for the list of Saints on Coins.   Heron did not see Saint Lambert.   Whilst Heron was searching a site located in Europa Zentral for a Liege County of Loon coin he found some Liege coins depicting Saint Lambert.   Several varieties.    The lowest price Heron could find was a coin dated 1744 at US$ 2,781.   That is absolutamente out of Heron's range.   Heron is posting this 'update' to assist in keeping the Coin Chatting bjord alive.   And also keep this list of Saints on Coins tred alive.   Regardvs.

After searching many places, Heron found a Copper token listed under Liege:

No date.   However, the price was much lower than for the Ecu: US$64.

Liege - 1744 - Liard - Copper - XF.

Range 106 to 109.  

This is much lower than for the Ecu.  

Sankt Lambert on Ecu range 2200 to 4500!

Heron discovered this item whilst continuing the search for a County of Loon/Looz or a Duchy of Loon/Looz.   Looz is the Germannic spelling.

Always continuing the search for obscure places in zentral & oest Europa!.

My research shows that Saint Lambert was the bishop of Maastricht in the late 7th century, but made him self unpopular with a Frankish prince by questioning his fathering of children out of wedlock. For this politically uncorrect accusation, he was murdered by lance in (where else?) Liege, around 700 A.D.

I am embarrassed I do not yet have a coin, given my connections to Belgium, where Liege is now located (and, as if the town name is not confusing enough, we have Liege - French, Luik - Flemish)

Re; coins of Sankt Lambert.   In addition to French & Flemish we also have the Deutsche spelling of Luttich.  Umlaut over the U.   Or perhaps spelt Luettich if our keyboard contains no Umlaut...?    During Heron's search early morning of 14 Nov he did find a coin of Looz!   However, the price was outta Heron's range.  Gotta keep searching though.  Never know what we will find.  Especially now when more coins are being 'listed' for sale.   Thanks for the info of Sankt Lambert.   Heron never heard of this Sankt until this week!   A rough way to depart this world.  Probably why he is now a Sankt...!    Regardvs.

Saints On Coins info continued:

Heron recently acquired a coin issued in northern Italia.  Not because it has a Saint onnit but because it was issued by an 'issuing entity' that was on Heron's 'want list'.

The Issuing Entity:  Castiglione delle Stiviere Municipio in Mantua.  

The Sankt there on:  Sankt Luigi Gonzaga.   Full Length Facing Figure.

Coin acquired locally.

And so Heron, sorda accidently, obtains a Sankt Coin when Heron was really after a new 'issuing entity'.   A Two-fer por seguro!

And the coin collecting fun continues onward.   Always a great hobby.

This coin will 'reported' soon as Nummer 345.  Perhaps very soon...!
