Earring & ring with interchangeable center stones - help please!

Hi! I was sent over here from th Jewelry & Gemstones board for more help with this set. I've copied all the info over here so it's easy to view. So far I've gotten 80s and European, but nothing else.

=======

One of our consignors brought this in for us to sell, and I am clueless. It's a ring and earrings in 14k gold with tiny diamonds and changeable center stones, lapiz, turquoise and onyx. The turquoise one for the ring is missing, but everything else is intact. The stones in the ring have a screw post in the center and the earrings unhinge and the stones slide out to change.

The original owner is deceased, so we can't find out how much it cost originally or how old it might be. I am assuming this was custom made, but perhaps not. I've never seen a set quite like this before.

I know I shouldn't really ask about pricing, but I do want to get her a fair price. We'll be selling it in our store, not on ebay or anywhere online. Our regular jeweler (who is usually very good about giving honest estimates) wanted to buy the set immediately, so he didn't want to help price it.

I've tried searching and while I've found all sorts of rings or earrings with gold, diamonds and any one of stones, I haven't found any sets, nor any with changeable parts. Maybe I'm using the wrong search terms. If someone has any suggestions, I'd really appreciate it. All the pieces are marked 14K 585. At least that what I think it says, I can't find my loupe to check. Here are some quick and dirty pics, I can take more if needed.

Thanks!

Lisa

I've found gold sets with interchangeable stones, but not like yours. Check Alter Gem Jewelry (faceted gemstones) and Orbis Jewelry (gemstone balls). House of Onyx (gemstone cabochons) has a couple of styles.

Well, they look very nice!

No idea who made them, I agree, your items look to be custom made.

Have them checked out & please ignore the rude poster here.

They look well made... & w/ kt Gold, I would say higher end than the assertion of the rude poster.

The darker blue may be reconstituted, dyed "composite" stone material. They all look like they *might* be... But w/ the Gold, I would have them looked @.

It would be unusual to see the (lighter blue) Turquiose so "clean", & just about anything can be dyed black & blue...

Just ask my knee - I whacked it on the coffee table, last night.

Beautiful set..and obviously custom made. Have you discussed with your consignor what price she would be happy with? Or gotten an appraisal? I dont know that anyone in here could even give you a price..since it wont be sold on Ebay...which obviously promotes flea market prices.D.

I don't think they are custom made, I know I've seen these for sale over the years. Certainly not very common though.

I'm sure the flat pieces for the earrings aren't composite material. Well, the lapis pieces anyway. The veins are pretty light and sparse, but you can see where they continue through to the unpolished back of each stone. The flat pieces are very thin, slightly rounded on top and faceted in back to fit the space. The turquoise - maybe composite, maybe not. The color in them is fairly even, but it's not perfect. Hard to tell though as I was using the cheap camera at the shop with a flash.

The lapis stone in the ring - almost no veining, but it does seem fairly soft and it shows some wear, while the onyx doesn't. Could easily be composite, and I didn't get a chance to clean it today where I can see the back of the stone. I wish they hadn't lost the turquoise piece for the ring, that would help. The onyx is probably just plain onyx, nothing special about these sizes or shapes, just the base they got stuck in. :-)

I was wistfully hoping someone with a B&M might see this and have some suggestions. The shops around here usually have the jewelry either priced insanely high, or so cheap you wonder who wanted to steal the item while pricing it.

It certainly could be custom made, it's not like I had the pieces out of the cases when I saw them years ago (think poor college student). There are a a lot of patents for interchangeable jewelry devices but I haven't found one that looked like this.

I'll clean it up and take new pics with my better camera. Assuming the lapis and turquoise are real and not composite, what's best to clean those parts with? just a damp soft cloth or very soft brush? At least they come out so I can get the gold and diamond parts clean.

I did look through all the patents, and you are right, nothing similar. the Alter Gem stuff has a few hinged type things with flat stones and some diamonds, but the screw-in base on the ring is just so different.

I saw a set similar to that at the wharf market last week. There were two stones missing and they were not as ornate as the ones pictured. Marked 9kt with another mark on them. $35AUD The stones were black green and blue. they were in a small oblong box that appeared to have been made for the set. I noticed them becasue I had never seen something ike that before. (Dang. See what you gals have done to me. i am refusing to wear a brooch all the same) If they still have them next week I will get a photo of them.

Do you have a large, clear photo of any/all markings you can post?

No markings other than the 14K585, which is stamped in two places on each earring and once on the band of the ring.

I can't get a good closeup of the marking with the camera here at the shop. I'm Beginning to loathe this set.
