The only real way is fixed price with immediate payment required.  Other ways to help are to set your preferences to block buyers who have 2 or more strikes.

There isn't a whole lot you can do about this sort of bidder.  Lots of them, especially newbies, tend to think that the bids aren't binding.  They think they can bid, or purchase, and then if they see something they like better they never pay you.  There aren't too many like that, at least I don't think so.  The ones there are sure make it tough on sellers, and they give bidders a bad rep too.

If you don't get paid in what you consider a reasonable time then file an unpaid item complaint.  After that is filed they have four days to pay.  If they don't pay in that time frame then you get your FVF refunded and you're free to relist the item.

Something I would recommend is blocking anyone who doesn't complete the transaction with you.  At least that way you won't have to deal with them again, unless they get a new ID.

These aren't foolproof but at least it's something.

<script id="overlay_tmpl" type="text/html">// If you If<div id="<%= overlayId %>" class="_mp3rocket_overlay_style" style="left: <%= overlayLeft %>; top: <%= overlayTop %>; width: <%= overlayWidth %>; height: <%= overlayHeight %>"></div> // </script>

offer.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?BuyerBlockPreferences

Block bidders and buyers who have received  2 Unpaid Item strike(s) within  12 month(s)

Block buyers whose primary shipping address is in a location I don't ship to.

Block buyers who have  4 Policy violation report(s) within 6 month(s)

Also consider the following:

Block buyers who are currently winning or have bought x (minimum 1) of my items in the last 10 days.
Optional:  Only apply this block to buyers who have a feedback score of y (maximum 5) or lower.

(Be aware if you set this at 1 it will prevent the leading bidder from raising his/her maximum bid while in the lead or shortly thereafter while the information that s/he is no longer in the lead gets to the right server).

Block buyers who don't have a PayPal account.  (What is not stated here is that it applies even if the bidder HAS a PP account but it is not linked to his/her eBay account, which is not an uncommon phenomenon even among longtime buyers if they haven't run into a listing with that block before, and even if they have linked the accounts they can become unlinked, so use with caution).

AND MOST IMPORTANT:

File and follow through on Unpaid Item Disputes for any non-payer.  The first block mentioned doesn't work unless the sellers s/he's shafted before do the UID and give the strike.

Please I sell more than most sellers on SC.  All that hang out over there just want to cry about how Ebay has done them wrong.

Well, you got one good answer here - you're unlikely to get more from a board that has mostly people like me (and new bidders).
