Updates are happening to some item specifics and category structures

--Final Update, October 28--

The category changes announced in our Fall Seller Update have been completed.

Now that all category changes are complete, while you might still see some adjustments to searches, it is okay to update or edit your listings without concerns of losing data or having it moved again.

We appreciate your feedback on this roll-out. We'll continue to adjust the process based on the input we’ve received here, and we'll take all of these suggestions into consideration for future updates.

As this project is now complete the post is being locked from further comments.

Resources and observations

We’ve heard from you that updating your Item Specifics in time for the February 2022 requirement date may be a challenge.

A useful tool that may help is located in the Seller Hub under Listing>Active. There is a drop-down box labeled ‘Download’ which will generate an Excel document for ‘Missing Required or Recommended Item Specifics’. You can read more about this tool here.

Should you come across any inaccuracies within the new Item Specifics we ask that you report those directly to sdsupport@ebay.com so our team can investigate. Outside of that, please share suggestions as to changes you'd like to see going forward here, selecting the Categories and Item Specifics option.

---Update as of October 19th---

We apologize for this delayed update. Thank you for your patience while our teams worked to finalize category changes.

All listings have been moved to their final destination categories. You may now proceed with checking your categories, revising items, and updating item specifics where needed.

Some item specifics have been renamed, and the value you originally provided has been copied over to the new item specific, so you don’t need to re-add these item specifics. We encourage you to update your listings with item specifics that are showing as “Required Soon.” These will become required on February 22, 2022.

All other item specifics are either Recommended or Optional. Learn more about item specifics.

Some categories were retired and replaced by product-based categories. You and your buyers can still find the items you’re looking for. Simply browse to the product category of your choice and use the filters to refine your search.

More information about key category changes:

  • Dolls & Bears. The categories based on Brand/Material/Theme/Character/Franchise/Product Line/Type of doll have been retired. Former categories have been replaced by left-hand navigation filters in the new Dolls & Doll Playsets category. You can access the filters by browsing to the product category of your choice and using Brand/Vintage/Material/Theme/Character/Franchise/Product Line/Type filters to refine your search.

  • Pottery & Glass. The categories based on Brand/Origin/Production Style/Production Technique have also been replaced by filters. You and buyers can now filter by the Brand/Origin/Production Style/Production Technique/Time Period Manufactured.

  • Postcards. The categories based on Location/Theme/Subject have been retired and replaced with two main categories for Topographical and Non-Topographical postcards. The former categories have been replaced by left-hand navigation filters in the two new main categories. For example in Topographical Postcards, you can filter by Country and Region.

  • Jewelry & Watches. The categories based on Main Stone and Metal Type have been retired and replaced by product-based categories under Fine Jewelry. Use the filters for Main Stone and Metal to refine your search.

---Update as of October 14th---
The work continues on this move and is progressing according to plan. We are on track and anticipate all category changes for your listings to be complete by end of day tomorrow (10.15). Thank you for your patience while our teams implement these changes.

---Update as of October 13th---

We continue to work through this change and thank you for your patience as our teams work through it. We wanted to provide answers to some top concerns and questions:

Why are Gallery Plus fees being charged for items that were previously free?

We determined that a technical issue impacted a small number of listings, which resulted in incorrect charges (including Gallery Plus, subtitles, and insertion fees) for some sellers. The issue has been fixed and we will be crediting impacted sellers as quickly as possible. No calls to Customer Service are necessary as credits will be issued automatically.

The eBay Standard Envelope shipping option is grayed out and I can’t select it. When will the issue be resolved?

The eBay Standard Envelope shipping option issue resulted from the category changes update and has been resolved. eBay Standard Envelope is now available in applicable categories if your item meets the established criteria.

Should I edit my listings if they’re in the wrong category, have been moved to another category, or have wrong or missing item specifics?

No. Recent category changes require updates to many thousands of servers and data changes to nearly every aspect of our platform. This level of adjustment takes time, which is why we asked for your patience while the process runs. We expect most data updates to be completed within 48 hours, but can they take up to a week (i.e., through Oct. 19). After that, if you have an item specific in mind that you think would work well for your listing, please consider adding it as a custom item specific.

Why isn’t my item coming up in search?

The category change update is still in process. We anticipate search issues will resolve when we complete most data updates during the next 24-48 hours.

There are more item specifics now than ever before. Do I need to fill in all of them?

No. Item specifics that you have already filled in will be maintained as the category moves are completed during the next week. In addition, new soon-to-be-required item specifics are being added and will become required by Feb 22, 2022. As always, the more item specifics you fill out, the better visibility your listing has to buyers.

For Parts & Accessories, when will fitment/compatibility charts start working again?

There was an issue with parts compatibility not working properly as the category changes rolled out that has been resolved. You should now be able to see the options to add fitment compatibility when editing your listings.

-----------------------------------------------------------

We’re updating some of our categories and item specifics to make your listings easier to find.

Starting October 12th, you’ll see updates to the following categories. Learn more about category changes →

Collectibles & Art

Jewelry

Musical Instruments

Parts & Accessories

Sporting Goods

As these updates go into effect, you may see temporary impacts to your listing experience or to the visibility of listings in the affected categories.

This is a result of listings transitioning to the updated item specifics and category structures. Your affected listings should return to normal within 48 hours, though you may see irregularities on some listings for up to a week. We recommend checking your item specifics and categories in affected listings after these updates are complete.

These updates also include new item specifics in the above categories, which will be required February 22, 2022. Starting today, these item specifics will be available as you list, with the “Required Soon” tag. Learn more →

Keep an eye on this page over the coming days—we’ll be sharing up-to-date information on affected categories and listings, and answering any questions you have.

Re: Updates are happening to some item specifics and category structures

This whole bit is scary, I am to source more items next week but may not buy more inventory

because if this is going to be the way search results are in the future I'm afraid sales will be

in the tank, I think this all has to do with the "pay for clicks" promotion they started.

All the worry we're seeing in this thread is based on the assumption this is how things stay. Personally, I believe categories and listings are in a transitional stage and people are panicking prematurely. Does that mean there aren't problems? No. Does that mean we won't have work to do? No. Does that mean it couldn't have been done better? Emphatic no! But I'm not ready to say the sky is falling just yet. I am upset they put us in a position to think it is though.

Given the extent of the changes, I think eBay's communication was lacking and their implementation is taking longer than it should. It is leaving people with slow/no revenue streams while eBay is 'monkeying' with the system. I can't help but think there had to be a better way, IF eBay truly cared about us.

Case in point; they started giving a warning today for each attempt to edit a listing, saying they were working on things that could affect this listing. They ask you to go through an extra step to confirm you want to edit anyway. Great! But where was that step yesterday when it was more critical?? (When 'shtuff' first hit the fan.) I edited several listings yesterday and lost ALL my Item Specifics AND my Compatibility Lists because I didn't remember/realize this was going on. (And/or didn't dream it would be a cluster like this, frankly.) Recreating Compatibility Lists is no small task...

Not bringing the possibility of problems to our attention during edits yesterday was no small oversight. I'm sure they'll tell us we're really the ones to blame. They'll say they told us Fall Update was coming. (It's a pattern of behavior, in my opinion.) I don't know about anyone else, but I don't set up a notification in my calendar, reminding me Fall Update is dropping on such-and-such date... Sure, I saw emails on it at some point, but I'm not going to remember the exact date. If nothing else, because it's not usually the disaster this one has been. And make no mistake. Having listings and categories messed up for 2-7 days IS a disaster. The fact they didn't have the fore-thought to come up with a different plan rather than assume we would all feel 2-7 days is reasonable is mind-boggling...

This is exactly what I've been saying @replacementradios. Great post.

Re: Updates are happening to some item specifics and category structures

As of right now I have almost 1000 listings that are riddled with errors that I did not put there.  How I do I know that this will fix its self.  If it does not, finding all of these created errors can be like finding a needle in a haystack.   This can lead to problems with buyers and the buyer experience.  I do I and will I know that my listings are accurate?  This is a total nightmare and completely unnecessary!  My sales have tanked I my listings that I worked so hard to make accurate, attractive and buyer appealing has been sabotaged in the click of a mouse.

PLEASE EXPLAIN TO ME HOW THIS HELPS A SINGLE BUYER FIND ANYTHING EASIER. IT DOES NOT. I WOULD REALLY LIKE TO KNOW THE REAL AGENDA HERE BECAUSE THE ONE YOU GAVE US CANNOT BE TRUE.

Re: Updates are happening to some item specifics and category structures

I buy and sell O gauge trains, There is no "category" for the scale so when I search for

trains I get them ALL! I have ZERO interest in looking at H.O. scale or N scale or Z scale

or........You get the idea. I want to filter my search by the scale I am interested in. If I as

a buyer can't search the way I want that means MY BUYERS can't find my items.

Re: Updates are happening to some item specifics and category structures

eBay needs to wake up.  It is impossible for many users to find the items they are looking for.  All of my toy train searches are not working properly.  When I called customer service they were clueless.  Very disappointed ☹️.

Ebay has singlehandedly destroyed the buyer experience in the Postcards category.....wow.

I just started selling postcards and had a few nice sales.

That's over now...

I am also a buyer who now cannot find anything.

I feel so sorry for those who make/made their living from this category.

Re: Updates are happening to some item specifics and category structures

I agree, I am not sourcing anymore inventory until I see where this is going, I may ride out my existing goods and see what happens to sales, but they have to tank.....I can't shop so how is anyone else going to shop? I am not muddling through thousands of irrelevant items. For 2 days now I have gave up on looking for items.

Re: Updates are happening to some item specifics and category structures

After the absolute Cluster &*^% you made with Comic book item specifics I feel for the people in the categories you're working on now. The Comic item specifics are abysmal, obviously designed by someone with no knowledge of....anything.

You need to stop changing things, your categories worked well for years, guess you want to lose business.

@coffeebean832

Yes, I remember reading about that somewhere along the way.  Perhaps they were afraid they might give away some trade secrets.  Spring updates?  Nah, it is sort of anti-climatic knowing what the punch line is this far in advance (and the neck gets sore shaking my head that much, for that long).  But, since they are paying for the popcorn, ....

Re: Updates are happening to some item specifics and category structures

All of the items in my store are collectibles. Now buyers are going to be overwhelmed with too many results. I am afraid of the impact this will have on my future sales please reverse this.

Re: Updates are happening to some item specifics and category structures

UGH The doll category is so convoluted now that I will be listing my dolls on another site. There is truth to the saying "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".

Re: Updates are happening to some item specifics and category structures

It's almost as if there is some ulterior motive. It's one thing to annoy sellers (we complain and adapt).

But these changes almost seem like e Bay is sabotaging its own site by making it impossible foe buyers to search by category.

Buyers will leave...

I literally sold the few shares of stock I owned today.

Re: Updates are happening to some item specifics and category structures

True. But I think these changes are going to have such a negative impact on the buyer experience that revenues will plummet.

Wait a quarter or two and see what happens..

Just my opinion and not trying to give advice or encourage anyone one way or another...
