The negative won't have any affect on becoming a top rated seller since it is no longer among the criteria. Good follow-ups are important, though, for future buyers to see and have confidence in how you handle issues if they arise. As you say, mistakes happen. Most of us have had bad feedback from time to time, I certainly have, and I just deal with the issue and move on.
